I've got a '96 and the stock stereo is starting to throw fits. The front right speaker will sorta cut out over some bumps... it plays really faint. The right rear speaker drops volume a little but not nearly as much. If I hit another bump sometimes it comes back. But I've also found that if I crank the volume up and down a few times it starts to play normal again until the next set of pot holes. The system is totally stock right now.

I've pulled the door panel and checked the wiring and it seems to be ok. I tried a different speaker I had and it did the same thing so I don't think its a speaker issue. I'm thinking it might be in the head unit or in the amp if I have one. I don't have the Sub in the back - so does that mean I don't have an amp?

Also, I have the factory 6-disc changer in the console and would like to keep it. If I could change out head unit and keep it I probably would - but I'm not ready to junk the changer if I don't have to. I'm less worried about keeping the rear controls.

Any suggestions on if it might be the head unit? wiring somewhere between it and the amp / speakers? or an amp if I have one.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I am about 99% sure you have a factory amp. I have a 98 without a sub and it had the factory amp. I would look at the factroy amp and see if everything is pluged in good. I dont know why it wouldnt be but if that is ur problem then you didnt have to spend any money fixing it. Hope you fix it!

If it usually only happens when your truck is jarred(pothole), then it sounds like a loose wire somewhere. Did you check the actual connections on the speakers? Make sure they are tight. It could be anywhere between the HU and the speaker. If possible, I would switch out the HU, maybe a friends?, and start eliminating potential problems. Just narrow down your search one piece at a time.
