that's it. the guy i talked to at ford today said the computer listed a front rotor for vacuum controlled hubs and one without, but he said he couldn't tell if they were actually different (he was just looking at the computer screen). i assume that is the one for the 95s and the other years that used the vacuum system. but... are the rotors actually any different from a 99 set? thanks in advance?

Man Jason, i was just sitting thinking about it and i just can't see there being any difference. Why are you wanting to know anyways?

No explorers ever came with vacuum hubs. 98-99 rangers did though.

But alas, there IS a difference. Starting in '98, the 4WD explorer rotors changed over to a 2 piece design. 95-97 4x4 rotors are one piece.

2 piece design huh. That's wierd. Does it actually come in 2 pieces?

I'm getting confused by the terminology here.

Aren't the 4wd rotors on the 98 and newer like the picture I posted of my 97 rotor? My rotors are not part of the hub, but slip over the wheel studs and are held on by the wheel.

I thought the difference was between the 4wd rotors (like mine) and the 2wd rotors which have the wheel bearing races built into them, and so they are part of the hub. The 2wd rotors are held onto the spindles by the spindle nut.

Watch out for FrankRizzos first picture where he has cut a rotor into separate pieces.

josh.. i was looking at buying the ones from zensius since he can't use them and i need new ones.

thanks for the link jason. but i swear my rotors are one piece. i just slip them off the studs as one big chunk. unless there is a second piece that i'm not thinking of. mine look a lot like the second pic that frankrizzo posted and the one that dogfriend posted on that link. well.. except the rust.

and thanks for the clarification on the vacuum hubs. guess he was looking at ranger ones too then. you guys have some sort of vacuum system though don't you? or did that have to do with the 4x4 system?

edit: (he posted while i was typing)
dogfriend.. yeah mine look just like what you posted.

My rotors are one piece as well. Frank's post on the other thread confused the heck out of me

Yes the 95-96 explorer has a vacuum actuated shift fork on the passenger side front axle.
