I've got a 97 Aerostar XLT with the 4.0L. I've put in a Sony head unit hooked up to the factory amp & I have Sony 6X9s in the back that really overpower the stock front speakers. I've been trying to figure out what size but all I've been able to figure out is that I should get 4" speakers and custom fit them. Does anyone know what the size of the speakers are, if there are any aftermarket speakers that fit, & if not, the best 4" speakers to get and how to fit them in? Also, does anyone know how powerful the factory amp is?

Welcome to this forum! Did you check WWW.Crutchfield.Com? They might have specifications on their website. I have Radio Shack 3 way speakers in the dashboard on my 88. They weren't an exact fit since they were slightly larger than the stock speakers, but they fit.

Thank you BrooklynBay! I emailed Crutchfield and they told me the best fitting speakers. They are Kenwoods.

I have gotten them, but I haven't been able to install them yet. They actually came with a 3 hole adapter, which crutchfield made it sound like they didn't when I talked to them. Hopefully I will get a chance to install them this weekend, & I will let you know how it goes.

The old speakers were 5.9 ohms and the new ones are 3.8 ohms when I measured them.

Thanks for taking the time to post the resistance of both speakers. I guess the 3 way speakers have lower resistance since they have 3 coils in parallel compared to an ordinary speaker which only has one coil.

Yea no problem. I got one of the speakers connected today to see how they sounded, but it got dark before I could actually install it. I'm going to have to cut some of the plastic that the speaker mounts to because the screws that hold the speaker to the adapter are in the way.

kenwood and pioneer make very good fitting ford speakers

No not really, it could have nothing to do with how the coils are wired, sometimes stock speakers are 6 ohms(this scenario), sometimes they are 4 ohms, most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm. they come in 2way, 3way, and even 4way

Clarion make good ones as well. But you WILL need to get the adapters.
