Explorer 98 xlt 4.0
Hello all. I just registered to the site today and am totally desperate for help. I have a 98 Ford Explorer xlt 4.0 sohc that had a broken cassette. My dear sweet dad went and replaced it and didnt mark the timing chain when he removed it. Well he put it back in incorrectly so now we have to yet again open it up to set the timing correctly. Problem is we have no idea how to do that and from what I gather its a pain in the a$$. Does anyone have any insight on a step by step process to set the timing correctly and how to tell its been correctly set. Any information is greatly appreciated.

OTC-6488 tool set

The easiest and most accurate way to time the camshaft is with the OTC-6488 timing tool set that costs around $180. There are no marks on the chains or sprockets for timing. Timing is established by having the #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke and the camshaft positioned so the slot in the camshaft is below the axis of the camshaft and parallel to the valve cover mating surface of the head. Check out the SOHC V6 timing related threads in Dale's Helpful Threads (my signature) for more information.

The SOHC V6 is an interference engine and if the timing is too far off the pistons will strike the valves. Did you start and run the engine?
