Front transfer case noise?

***NOT transfer case, I mean front differential noise***

Just purchased a 1996 Explorer 5.0 Control Trac with 196k after owning several
Grand Cherokees. I like the Explorer -- it corners better, has lighter steering, and the longer wheelbase gives it a better ride.

However, there is noise coming from the front, probably the differential -- it's a slightly audible dragging/scraping noise, louder at highway speeds, no change when turning.

My questions -- how long before I have to fix this? How much money? Is it safe to take on a road trip? Am I even right about the diagnosis?

Sounds like a brake or bearing problem to me.

i think it is a bearing problem. how difficult is it to replace both sets on the front?

"IF" your sure it is the front hubs, they are not bad to change out. 1st time will take the longest, about an hour each. After that, if you ever have to do it again, 30 mins each.

There is a sticky on how to replace it, in the stock section of the 2nd gen.

Timken brand is the preferred Hub, but any will do.

Frt diff noise

i belive i have a problem with the frt diff on my 03 v8 explorer
does anyone have a idea how hard this is to repair
i have already change the frt wheel bearings
now i'm not sure how far i should follow this issue?
any info would help thanks

Just purchased a 1996 Explorer 5.0 Control Trac

If it's a stock 5.0 V8 Explorer, it has the BorgWarner 4404 AWD transfer case. Not Control Trac. FYI.

Being a '96, what kind of cv-joint is at the t-case end of the front driveshaft? Most likely a double-cardan.
