front U joints

[92rangercap]

my 1992 ranger grinds and pops when the 4wd is engaged and your turning. at first i blamed the hubs but now i'm sure its the u joints. i don't see any rings holding the bearings in,it looks like there's some kind of cap at each u joint bearing. never had a front axle off ,are the u joints pressed in ? could really use some advice ,don't want to pull an axle to find out its over my head. any help would be appreciated.

I do belive they are. Somewhere I saw a post on how to remove them using a special tool. On the same post it showed how some people tacked weld around it for serious off roading. I'll try to find the post.
