Howdy. My electronics instructor said that turning a head unit on, with nothing connected to the speakers, can instantly fry the internal amplifier, etc. Is that true? I think he mentioned that the internal chip must see 8 ohms produced by the speakers (it might have been 4, I can't remember) and if it doesn't it'll fry.

I ask because when I got my AVH-P6400 I bench tested it for a minute or so, with just the 3 power related wires connected. I installed it and has worked fine for months. And, what if I wanted to use strictly pre outs to send the audio out to an amplifier and then to the speakers? Do you have to do something to the head unit speaker wires or just let them hang there (more or less)? Is there an internal "switcher"? Thanks.

I am new to the world of amplifiers

your electronics instructor prolly remembers back in the day and knows nothing of today. go for it, I did it for a year with my alpine 7893, and my 7995 (which doesnt have an internal amp and is meant to be used only for preouts... precisely what you are doing)

Thanks for the replies. I guess I have nothing to worry about.
