Is there any way (other than j@@p cans) to increase the fuel capacity of my '95 Sport? I'm getting a pop-up trailer and would really like more built in capacity to make up for the loss in mileage. You know, like those extra capacity tanks available for trucks.

The Explorer range is already short (approx 300 miles to bingo fuel). Carrying 10 or 15 gallons externally and having to deal with pouring it on the road isn't very appealing.

Thanks,

Well, I have seen an ad in some four wheel mags of some company that make I think a 30 gal replacement tank for explorers. The ad is about 1/3 of the page width wise and runs the whole length of the page and is usually on the left side of the page towards the backs of the magazines, black and white has a long list of things. Hopefully that was descriptive enough.

Thanks for the tip. Guess I'll have to go over to Safeway (best magazine rack in Ukiah, CA) tomorrow & pretend I'm going to buy a magazine. LOL!

Anyone have experience with this? The larger fuel system that is. I assume we all have about the same supermarket as library experience!

Thanks Again,

Jerry,
Go to the readers rig section here and look at Gloria Zimmerman's truck. I believe they took the spare tire out from under the explorer and added a 2nd 15 gallon gas tank.

theres a little punk up the street from me with one of the Mcneil conversion Ford Rangers -I'm pretty sure his parents paid for all of it - but anyways, he stopped by one day and wowed me with his lack of knowledge, but explained that perry mcneil had added a larger gas tank to bring it up to 30 if I remember right? I think Mcneil probably got it from an aftermarket company, or out of a long-bed F-150, either would work. Not sure if the same conversion could be made to the Explorers but I don't see why not.

On a side note, I told this kid that I had come back from Moab with about $2000 in damage to my rear diff, and broke a few other minor things, etc. and he told me he went to Moab and came back with his steering gearbox held on my zip ties... LOL

Sounds like Moab is the place to go if you need an excuse to upgrade your equipment. Maybe I'll set up a garage outside of there and rake in the dough.( I have plenty of zip-ties!)

Goober,
Do you have any pics of your rig? Would love to see how it looks. Also - planning a trip later this year to Ocala National Forest. Any interest in joining?

I have seen those adds in various 4wheel drive magazines. Listings for older and newer Explorers. However, I think the ones I saw are for 4 doors but check out the 4x magazines and you can call the manifacturer for more information.

The one I saw for my '91 4dr would increase the capacity to 30 or 33 gallons. The existing tank is removed and replaced with a new one that is longer and a little wider. Cost was aroung $350.00.

fuel tank

Hi JerryB
i live in Australia down under we have a long range tank for 96xlt 4door explorers .
It fit's where your spare wheel is and give you an extra 90lit of fuel , so i can carry 175lit , but i had to buy a swing out spare wheel carrier that bolts to my rear bumper .
Seeee Yaaaa

I know this one too!!

Hey guys...

I don't know if these are the caddies Chux is talking about, but there are two available in Australia. One sits on the right hand side of the bumper (suits 95, 96, 97 Explorers with no centralised license plate). In Australia, our license plates sit on the tailgate to the left on these models (which is perfect for these racks).

However, I have a '98, and the plate gets obscured. Also, as we drive the car from the right side (as in CORRECT side :)), it gets in the way when backing up.

There is also this one which is centrally mounted, onto a Reese Hitch (all one unit):

In any event, having either of these options means it is possible to fit an auxilliary fuel tank in the now vacant space.

http://www.oppositelock.com.au if you want to check out the tank that Chux has (I'm pretty sure).

Hope this helps.

Some older rangers, mostly the long beds, cam with dual tanks. The second tank was located under the red behind the rear axle. You could harvest the whole system at a salvage yard and I am sure that would work. If the tank doesn't fit, Which I don't know why it wouldn't, you could get a tank off a Bronco II which is located exactly where our spare tire is, respectfully. The other parts off the dual tank ranger should finish the job of utilizin the tank.

Hey Jerrry, I have some good news and some bad news. The good is that I found the article. It is in the march 2000 fourwheeler, page 124.

The bad news is that it only fits 91-00 4-DOOR.

The tank is a 30 gallon replacement tank.
The ad says they have over 234 models, and they only list about 40 or so.

For those of you who go offroad a lot, they also make skid plates for all of their tanks.

You might try calling them up and seeing if they either have one for you, or can make one for you. Their address & phone number is:

FAX: 909-737-8226

I am gonna give them a call to see how much it would be for my 91 4 dr, and how hard it is to do.

Tom, user name FAKRWEE, has an extra or larger tank in his 2dr Navajo. You might email him from the members page and see where he got it. He had it in Moab and had no problems. It may be the same company that rock883 wrote about.

WOW FOLKS:

Thanks to all who responded! Where else can you get so much information & help from all over the world? What makes this board great.

I'll explore the possibilities mentioned & let you know what I find and decide to do.

Thanks Again,

As soon as I get a basket rack for my truck so i can mount my spare on the roof im going to get a gas tank from a BII and hopefully get the rest of the fuel system out of an f150 with dual tanks.

I thought aero tanks quit making fuel tanks for exploreres because there wasnt enough intrest. give them a call to be sure but i think when i e-mailed them last year they said that. if yall know of any other companies id like to know too. Major
