I had a similar issue with my 04 Taurus original fuel pump it was not all the time but got worse with time turns out the return valve in the pump was sticking... not same car but similar. Also I paid a shop to install it and the first one they put in worked two minutes... glad it wasn't me

I could hear it run but return was stuck so no start... had them tow it and they said it started fine and they in two days couldn't make it happen do diagnose, I came to pick up and wouldn't start for me in their lot ( took a while to figure out problem)
