Fuel Economy 220 miles on tank??

That is terrible, I almost always get over 300 to a tank around town and have gotten 400 on the highway. Even towing I would expect better than that.
This usually comes down to how you are driving the vehicle and in what conditions.

Yes miles.
The Explorer has around a 20 gal tank. I get between 15 and 16 mpg around town and 18-23 on the highway doing 70-75.
Around town I am not the fastest one off the line but I certainly am not slowing anyone up. Unless there is an issue with your vehicle or you are using E85 instead of regular gas it likely has to do with how you drive. If you are exceeding 4 or 5k rpm's on a regular basis your mpg will suffer.

I've owned my 04 V8 for almost a month now. My first tank I got 15 mpg. I was at about 240 miles with a quarter of a tank left.
With the V8 you really want to be aware of how you pull away from a stop. I was a little jumpy at first, not being used to the soft pedal and it caused the mileage to go down to 13 mpg on the second tank.
I try not to go under a quarter of a tank because the pump starts to pick up the contaminates in the bottom of the tank and could clog the fuel filter.

I usually get 300 Plus. That also means I wait for the "check Gage" light to come on and drive for about another 20 miles or so. I always drive at 2000RPM or less. When getting on the Expressway I may hit 2500 -2700 while accelerating/ cruising. I do occasionally gun it just to make sure it could go if needed 
But, I have a V6 OHV, just alittle smaller. I know my old Cheby van with the 350 in it got about 15-14 maybe 18 on the expressway. I stay away from V8's for DD nowadays. Costs too much. Heck, my V6 is starting to kill me.

Your mileage is definitely low. I average 300 miles to the tank and I drive at least 70% of the time in the city. Cruising on the highway I easily get 400+ to the tank.

the tires certainly were low, and i don't think i have EVER gotten that little from a tank.... I am no light foot, but not Mario Andretti (most of the time) either...
Out of curiousity....how much stuff are you "carrying around" on a daily basis?
Are you making tons of little trips? 1-5 miles....
Do you leave it running a lot when not on the road?
have you switched brands of gas or gas stations?
All of these could lead to the poor mileage too...

yeah, I have idle issues and a miss...trying to track it down. also I drive with a/c on all the time and pedal down a little harder than I should

That is about what I get. You really need to evaluate your everyday driving situation. I have the same vehicle. My commute to work consists of many lights with 45 mph speed limits between lights. So the scenario is that you are racing from one light to the next. This is just a killer for fuel efficiency. Note, in normal city driving although you are going from light to light, it is generally at a crawl.
Prior to my 06 Explorer, I had a 2003 Mazda MPV with a 3.0L engine. My average fuel economy was not much better than with my Explorer. Let's face it, you did not buy your Explorer for fuel efficiency!
