anyone know where i can find a tech article on changing the fuel filter? would like to do this myself.

already tried using the search button but couldnt find anything......

It can vary based on what year yours is. I believe there are 2 or 3 different style connectors that connect the fuel lines to the filter. One style is a male/female connector (the male being the filter stem and the female being the fuel line connecter) that slides on to the filter stem and is held in place by a retaining "hairpin" clip. The other style (which is a PITA if you ask me) is the push connect or quick disconnect style fitting. This looks like a small version of the little thing you blow into on a trumpet. It is a female fitting as well, but slides over the stem of the fuel filter and snaps into place with a spring inside of the connector. To get this off, you need a quick disconnect release tool. However... it's an odd size, so it may be difficult to find one. I just found a cheapy 4.99 one at Autozone, but the smallest it went to was 3/8th of an inch, and I believe it's a 5/16th diameter one that you need.

As far as replacing them goes, I've heard it's a cake job and there isn't a whole lot to it. My buddies just said to elevate the front end (be it on a sloped driveway or those things you drive up on) and release the fuel system pressure by unscrewing the gas cap off. Then just pop the fittings, drop a new one in and reconnect the fittings. Like I said though, some years have whole housing units where you need to unscrew a wall that supports the filter while others (like my 95 sport) just have a C shaped thing that you pop the filter into.

You shouldn't need to change the filter yet, but just incase, its easy.

There are 3 types on connections, I have only seen 2 though, so more than likely yours is one of the 2.

Quick connectors -- the fuel line has a internal spring that locks onto the filter stem when push on. This requires a "special too" to remove. I just bought the multi pack plastic set from AutoZone for $10 which has all the sizes for fual and AC lines. Just snap the tool over the fuel stem, slide it up into the fuel line to release the spring and slide the fuel line off.

Clip Type--- this can be done by hand. The fuel line has a connector at the end with holes in it. The fuel line is push up on the stem and a plastic clip is use to lock it on the stem.

I have seen boith types used in the same filter, both ends different. Get a Haynes manual. It will describe it much better, along with any other questions you have about your truck.

And about depressurizing the line. I have done it with and without depressurizing and it doesn't seem to matter. Both ways I got gas everywhere. THe easiast way to depressurize it is to disconnect the impact fuel pump shutoff switch, mine was located in the passenger side floor board by the firewal
