I filled up my 04 Explorer tonight and when I got in, the gauge was only on 1/4. I took it for about a 10 minute drive and the gauge worked it's way up to 1/2. Why wouldn't it go to full? It's been working fine all along.

Thanks,
Doug

Common problem. One method of avoiding the problem is to remove the key from the ignition and close the driver's door when refueling.

....or problem with sending unit. I hope it's just the key left in the ignition.
Good luck.

The truck was definitely not running when I filled it up. The key was in my pocket and the doors were closed.

It did run out of gas a few days prior, and was started and stalled to get as close to home as possible. Almost made it, got within 80 meters or so. Then I went down to tow it a couple of hours later and it started and drive home without a problem.

Would that screw with the computer in any way? Should I disconnect the battery and let everything reset?

Just a thought.
Thanks,
Doug

My guess would be an issue with the sending unit which can also fix the problem with the gauge not responding to refueling, but I haven't had your problem with mine so I can't say for sure.

I had my sending unit and fuel pump replaced (under warranty)..the problem never came back.
They might attempt to "treat" it with some additives...it didn't do anything but just added an additional trip to the dealership to have the real fix.

running out of gas like that could cause issues. It could be a issue or a glitch that will work itself out.

It worked itself out. The gauge went up to full while I was driving today. Weird, but I'm glad it's working now.

Thanks,
Doug
