I bought a 1992 Explorer xlt 4x4 from a friend. The fuel gauge always shows empty, the temp gauge always shows cold, and the rpm gauge always shows 3000 rpm until i go above 3000. The only gauge im currently worried about getting fixed is the fuel gauge. What are the possible causes of the fuel gauge not working. What can i do to troubleshoot it? Any help is appreciated.

pretty much all your questions can be refined with a search, but since im in a good mood, ill go ahead and explain everything~!

The Tach is a fun fix!

You can fix the one you currently have, or replace it. its like 50 bucks from ford to replace, i fixed mine with a soddering iron.

You have to take the Trim Bezel out the dash, along with the 4x4 button, radio and 2 screws behind the ash tray. The rest will just snap out. Once you get the Bezel off, there will be 8 Torx screws. i believe they are t15? remove those so you can remove the Insturment cluster. The insturment cluster will not come out with just the screws out, you will have to reach your hand behind it and disconnect two wiring harnesses and 1 'quick-discconect' for the speedometer. That quick disconnect is not quick, and is definatlly not for people with soft hands. There will be a flat spot on the top you have to squeeze with on finger while you try and pull it out.

Once you get the Insturment cluster out there will be another set of 8 Torx screws to take the clear plastic sheild off. once thats off you will be able to remove all the insturments, as they are heald in by metal studs in the back which press into copper clips that the current flows through. Clean the studs on your tach, that should fix it. Take the tach apart a little bit to where you can see the small circut board in the back. on mine there was a burn stop on the top left of it. Check for little cracks on the sodder joints for the resisters, if they are cracked, hit them with a lil heat from a sodder gun. this fixed mine, and 6000 miles later it still works.

The Gas Gauge

Now this is the notorious broken First gen gas gauge. Your gas gauge actually needs a new sending unit with a new float, since its obvious you float (that floats on top of the gas to get a reading of how much gas is in there) has gained a hole and has filled up with gas and fallen to the bottom of the tank (hense you are always reading E)

You will have to drain your gas tank, or drive it until its out of gas. Then you will have to unbolt the tank from the cross-member. from there, there will be a couple wires that will go to the sending unit which you will need to replace. While you are in there you might as well replace the fuel pump and fuel pump relay if it hasn't been replaced already.

The Tempature Gauge.

this is probably from a faulty thermostat. a new one isnt anymore then 50 bucks if i remember correctly. Get some new anti-freeze while your in there and replace the old water.

all the great details!!!!
Thank you so much for your timely and accurate reponse.
