1993 Explorer XLT
I have a 1993 XLT. The vehicle has been sitting for 9 months and has only been started occasionally. I put some fuel in it the other day and the fuel gauge reads dead empty. Any ideas ? Fuse, wiring, stuck guage, bad sending unit in the tank ? It worked before I parked it for 9 months.

most likely the.... f i forgot what its called. the thing that sits in the tank to measure the level. most likely that filled up with gas and sank to the bottom. happens to a lot of xs. mine included.

EDIT: the float in the sending unit. someone posted the EXACT same topic right after this. wow.

The brass float attached to the fuel pump/guge assembly went bad on you and is full of gas, thus sinking to the bottom. Happened with my GT. New fuel pump assembly is about $120 on ebay. I checked to see if I could just buy the float but you can't (check local salvage yards too).

I had the same issue on a 92 I bought that came from Louisiana. They have a high sulfer (not sure) content in their gas and it caused the float in the tank to crack and take on fuel. The only hard part is dropping the tank. And you will need to get a tool to disconnect the fuel lines. They sell them at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts.
