Just got a 93 Explorer XLT 4X4 2 days ago. Everything works great except the fuel guage is stuck on empty. Before I shell out $110 for a sending unit and a pump, what can I check first to be sure it's that?

Does the gauge go up when the key is off then drop down after the key is turned on? This will tell you if it's the gauge or not.

After you pull the pump out, move the float up and down by hand and notice if the gauge moves...with the key in the "on" position. I had a '90 Bronco with a hollow brass float that developed a hole which allowed fuel inside the float and wouldn't let it "float" properly. I swapped out the float with one I found on a GM truck fuel pump and everything was fine.

The fuel guage is on Empty all the time, even if it's off or on. It never moves. Just stays on E.

I think you have a gauge problem then.
