fuel guage

My fuel guage on my '91 sport hasn't been working for approx a year and i finally got around to seeing what was wrong with it. I found out that the sender unit and float are all one unit and are purchased as one. Is this the best route to go or has anyone had any luck fixing it another way? I don't want to just solder the float, I'd prefer to either replace the float itself or just replace the whole thing. Has anyone gone this route and how much of a pain in the arse is it to do (obviously better if the tank is dry).

I'm pretty sure you can buy just the float from Ford....

i was able to get the float for $2. That was 2-3 three years ago. Float still sitting in the glove compartent. I know I can do 325 on a tank, just fill up every 250 or so.
