Help: The Vehicle: 2000 Explorer sport (late version no fuel return line with regulator internal to pump in the tank), with a 4.0 SOHC Auto 4X4. The fuel pressure as measured at idle on the fuel rail: 63psi

question: isn't that a bit high? I always thought that it should be 35-45 psi at idle with a maximum of 65 psi. All of the books I can access says "key on" is 30 to 65 not running but they also state Ford won't release the actual pressure while running at idle for this system and to take it to the dealer. Our Ford dealer where I bought it won't let me talk to a tech to find out either.

Vehicle's gas milage all of a sudden dropped to 12 mpg vice the normal avg 18 and 23 highway:exp: that I was getting. Has the correct new motocrraft plugs, new Fram air filter & Motocraft fuel filter. No misses detected, no check engine light or codes from the PCM and no black smoke from the exhaust pipe. It runs like scalded dog but the fuel milage is getting to me. Anybody know what the "at idle" fuel pressure should be? I don't want to drop this tank and spend $250.00 for nothing.

63 psi is fine for the returnless style system. This type of setup uses higher pressures than the return style system which had the 35-45 psi pressures that you're used to seeing. It's been said on this site that 56-72 psi is an acceptable range for the returnless system.

Thanks James! I just got it back together and it is steady at 62 psi at all rpms and during Key On/ Engine Off tests. maybe it's just me and the crappy winter blend fuel were getting up hear in Seattle. I'm almost to the point of being ready to pull out the 4.0 and put in a 5.0 It looks pretty easy except for the wiring harness. I already installed a 5.0 EFI in a CJ5.:exp:

Welcome to this forum! Don't expect the dealer to hand out any free information. They are the same way where I live too. I once tried to find out the definition of a certain code which I scanned, and they said that the only way they could tell me what it means is to have them connect my vehicle to their scanner for $85 just to read the same code again. I told them that I already know what the code number is, but they don't give anything out for free.
