1999 explorer
Hello, My daughter has a 1999 2 wheel drive, 4.0L OHV, Explorer. She is having some trouble with it when its a operating temp., sometimes it is
hard to start and idles rough. The first thing I check was the fuel pressure
on the rail, it was 80 psi. After about 5 min. it will bleed off to 50 psi and
hold it. I was going to replace the fuel pressure regulator and I know this sounds stupid but I can't find it. The feed line from the tank goes to what
the emissions decal calls a fuel damper ? I called NAPA and they said they
don't list a fuel pressure regulator 1999 4.0L OHV. I called Autozone and they
said for some reason it is not available. Any help would be greatly appreciated
from her and me. Thanks, Stewart

check out:
http://www.partsamerica.com/ReplacementParts.aspx

Do a search there for your parts, it's not a super easy site to get around, but has most parts I did a quick search for an FPR 99 explorer, and got a set if eftermarket holley and accel parts

Doesn't sound right that an efi wouldn't have an fpr, but maybe that's why I work on and drive them instead of building them huh?
It's a great place to look for parts interchanges too, but use two seperate browser windows not tabs.

Souds too me like you may have too much fuel pressure, which could be choking the engine with an extreme amount of fuel. I have a 1994 as well and fuel pressure should be 35-45 psi. Mine runs at around 40 psi. 80 seems pretty high to me which could be the regulator.

I have a 99 5.0L and I took it too a mechanic with the same problems rough idle and sometimes hard to start. My mechanic did the same thing. Thought the fuel pressure regulator was out. Then after some reasearch found out that 99+ use a closed loop fuel system and 60psi plus is correct. He changed out the pvc valve and the engine idles much smoother and starts better now. Worth a try ?

hmm... maybe my 1994 XL 4.0L OHV may need a pcv as well....
