I have read about 35 pass posts about this. I have yet to see a response as to if it helped the problem or what. If anyone has done this replacement of the fuel pressure regulator and it improved I would like to hear about it.

I'm not sure what your truck is doing, but i had the check engine light come on repeatedly and the codes read o2 sensor rich, crankshaft sensor, and ignition coil, although the actual problem was the feul pressure regulator, it gave me horrible acceleration, bad gas mileage and gas in the oil, because the pressure being to high, when i replaced it, the light went off and my mileage went to about 16 mpg city, which is about stock for a 91 explorer. also stopped putting soot inside the tail pipe.

Same here, I use to get the check engine light on while at high elevations and really poor MPG, had close to the same codes to, I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and cleaned the MAF and I've had no problems since.

Although the biggest improvement was when I went the extra mile and changed the intake manifold gasket and O2 sensor, this improved my mpg by at least another 5-7 miles per gallon.

I am sure there will be many responses to this. I just want to say thanks for replying. It really helps. I called on a fuel pressure regulator...87 bucks...wow...I will have to save my pennies.

Hey, actually i just got mine replaced today. 200 bux for parts and labor. man where did you find one for 87?! Anyways, mine was a pain. It messed up my O2 Sensor, MAF, and TPS. Either that or they all messed up at once. anyways, the gas pressure of the 92 explorers should be 35-40. Mine was at 90! Anyways, i got about 120miles to the tank faaaaaaaar away from my normal 250m. Also, no power and sluggish response and nasty foul smelling exahust. anyways, after getting it fixed my engine is acting better than it had in awhile. I'd highly reccomend doing it soon. Too rich of fuel can mess up yer CAT and other htings (like i found out).

Joel,
I don't see how the fuel pressure regulator could cause your MAF and TPS to be faulty. The MAF is located at the air box and the fuel has no effect on it there. The TPS is just a sensor that senses how far your throttle plate is opened up. It does not read fuel mixture or anything like that. It connects to the throttle shaft and as the shaft opens, it changes the resistance value that is sent back to the computer. I would guess that it was just coincidence. I would agree that it can cause the O2 sensor to malfunction due to the richness of the exhaust, it will foul the sensor out with excess carbon.

Eric,
Changed my FPR about a month ago and can tell a definite improvement in fuel economy, throttle response, and idle. If yours is defective, it would be well worth the money to replace it...especially with the current price of fuel. Now my combined fuel economy is about 17-18 MPG. Not bad when you consider the aerodynamics of a 2+ ton loaf of bread.

I used to be schizophrenic, but we're OK now...No we aren't...Yes we are... shut up.

Ira, sorry i really didnt go into details about it but what really happend was that my MAF was already on the fritz. But the fuel pressure regulator went out and caused the O2 Sensor to go out along with the MAF. The TPS problem just happend along with everything else. I really didnt mean to say that one caused each other. Some of it was just that htey all went out at once but i do know the 02 sensor was burned up by either the MAF goin bad or the FPR. I just kinda oversimplified what i ment.

How easy is it to change the fuel regulator,
and do you need any special tools to remove it?
