my 2000 mountaineer v8 just started killing. It shut down for no reason
and then killed when I put it into drive. I was able to get it the few blocks to my home but then I could barely get it into my garage
A couple of symptoms I noticed before. the fuel economy readout has shown that it isn't getting good mileage. (10 to 12mpg and usually is 14-15) I also smelled a little gas. the check engine light has been on for a year
Is this the fuel pump?

You got a lot going on...

With the CEL light on, you need to find out what pending and set codes are in the PCM... You need to verify the fuel pressure at the schrader valve and answer the question of when the last time maintenance was done on this vehicle...

Fuel filter, plugs, wires, PCV valve, vacuum hoses, air filter, MAF cleaning, and ECT sensors are just the start of what anyone will need to know when these were addressed...

And I am forgetting a few items I know but this is the beginning to try to guide you in the right direction to find out why your truck is barely running... Yes it COULD be a fuel pump or a dozen other items...

Time to get busy...

update

I can hear a noise back there with ignition on engine not running. Doesn't sound very healthy/ I also hear that noise after I shut it off sometimes.
Anyway I started it up today and it ran fine. I drove it around the block. The symptoms I described above happened last night after driving about 20 minutes

Had the codes read. evaporitive emission system leak no flow. And oxygen sensor x 2 too lean
