I have an intermittent fuel pump problem on my 1996 XLT V8.
Last week, after driving an hour on the freeway to work, running errands at lunchtime with several stop/start sequences, and driving an hour home on the freeway, I stopped for 2 minutes with the engine off, and it would not restart.
There was no fuel pump noise when turning the key on, which I can normally hear for about 2 seconds as it primes, and the engine cranks for won't start.
I tried swapping the fuel pump relay for the WOT A/C relay and taking the fuse out and cleaning the contacts without any success, but after it sat for 45 minutes, it started up fine, and I drove the 10 additional minutes to get home.
I used the Explorer several times after that around town without issues.
Then today, the pattern repeated itself with no priming immediately after driving for an hour.
Any ideas what could be causing the lack of priming on a very intermittent basis?
