Looks like I need a fuel pump, but I have a few questions that need to be ansdwered first.

Schucks has a fuel pump for $70, the dealership has a fuel pump for $170.

I have a sneaky feeling that the parts guy at schucks may not be quoting me the parts I need. he said fuel pump in tank. apparently Ford says the fuel pump comes as an assembly with floats etc.

Anyone have any experience with replacing these and what part or parts I need?

Also just wondering if anyone has installed an aftermarket electronic inline pump. My shop says they doubt one would be avaialble becuase a lot of pressure is needed to force the fuel out.

Any info would help here.

I had my pump replaced about 3 years ago for leaking. The shop installed a rebuilt one, taxes and labour included was just over $200 cdn. The pump does have the sending unit and floats attached with it.

They are both right

You can buy the complete assembly or just the pump. I bought an Autozone pump for my 92 and it fit. Bought the pump for my 89 Cherokee and it took a dozen ty-wraps to hold it in place. Also bought the Ford complete assembly. This comes with the new tank gasket. The old one may not seal without some RTV. It depends how much you like dropping the tank and you fear a sender problem. The aftermarket definitely have poorer bearings but they should last longer than you have the vehicle. And you could buy two at that price. Regulator problems may show up with a new pump.

You can buy the complete assembly or just the pump. Correct. Autozone has both. With a '91 I would pull the tank first and check the plumbing on top. I had to replace my assembly because one of the pipes outside the tank had a hole rusted in it. The pump was good.

Well this is on my 93 that has been down since Feb for a t-case/tranny replacement. after sitting for so long we were not getting any fuel at the shrader valve. everything was chased back to the tank so the tank is getting dropped today and worse case we replace the fuel pump. Hopefully there is a connection problem with the wiring and some corrosion is causing problems.

I will call around to get pump prices in town today, no Autozones......Just Napa, schucks and carquest. Then of course the dealers.

schucks should have what you need. You can either buy just the pump which is about 3 inches long or the entire fuel tank assembly which comes with the gauge float, filter, gasket and even the metal cap that holds it all together and to the tank. Once you remove the tank and the fuel pump/float assembly from that, you can take your pump and wire it directly to your battery to see if it spins. Don't do it for too long or it will burn out the pump if it works. Did you vheck the fuel pump relay? I can't remember for sure, but it is energized by the pcm or the pcm relay, without that, no power gets back to the pump. Hope this helps.

Well my guy says that he checked it and power is flowing back to the tank just fine. we checked the relays and even swapped them. power at the inertia switch is good. My fuel filter was bad so it was replaced. once tank is dropped he will check power at the sender to see if its getting power.

My buddy says to check the screen in the tank. I was really hoping to replace the fuel pump if bad with some kind of aftermarket inline electronic fuel pump. I just figured that someone would have made one. Dropping the tank is such a PITA.

Oh and apparently Schucks does not normally stock the fuel pump and its a special order so if I want to save money I would have to wait until Dec 4th for one to arrive. So its a delimna. Have it back today and spend more or wait until Dec 4th and save $100.

What to do???

a little off topic, but who here has cut a trap door in their ex so they can replace the fuel pump without dropping the tank.

just want to see if it is pretty easy to cut.

Hmmm well it only takes about 25 minutes to drop the tank and since it shouldn't be something happening that often a trap door seems like overkill especially since you will have to seal it up to prevent water etc from getting in.

The day the American Manufacturers starting putting the Fuel pumps in the tanks was the same day they should have made access panels for them.
The Swedes did it in the Volvo.

Short fuel lines, rusted tank straps, ahhh what were they thinking?

Hi kurt I would get the whole assembly. Like the others have noted the assembly comes in 2 pieces (the pump which is the size of a "D" cell battery, and the sending unit w/plumbing tubes and screen. After I dropped my tank I saw the tubes were severely rusted and swapping in a replacement pump would have been a temp fix. I got my complete unit from advanced autoparts with a lifetime warrantee for $120. Did you already drop the tank?

My guy is dropping the tank today. $120 is by far a better price than $170 from the dealer but then I would have to wait.

Well you have had the truck down since Feb., what's another 2 weeks? At least that would be my thinking if it were me.

Well here's the answer. My wife is really riding me hard to get it running. I have been driving her Explorer and she has been driving my offroad explorer to work, but the rear driveshaft is removed due to some torn pinion gear teeth so it front wheel drive only. We just got 18" of snow and my mom flew in for a week and she has a cane to help her walk and can't get into any of our Explorers without help. I want mine back so I can park the offroad Explorer and fix the rear gears and my wife can have her car back.

By the way my wife has been on me for a few weeks knowing that my mom was coming up but my repair guy works a little slow.

Edit: Oh and I commute an hour to work and my wife works 2 miles away so that why I dont drive my offroad Explorer to work.
