Full Centre Console Armrest question

So i have a full console with armrest in my 02 sport trac, and the armrest/compartment lid is very hard to open i really have to yank it with 2 hands. anyone have any idea why this might be? i suspect it migh be to do with the catches. but does any one have an idea on how to fix this issue? cheers

Is the top part separating from the black plastic on the underside of the lid? A few of the screws stripped out on mine and made it harder to open until i replaced them with bigger screws and now the problem has gone away.

no, there no separation the catches just seem very stiff/strong
