ok here goes, 1998 xplorer xlt 4.0 OHC

About 2 months ago, Wife was driving the truck and said that the truck was jerking and bucking between 25-45 miles per hour. Of course I went out and Drove it right away and couldnt find anything wrong, so I sent her on her way, about a week later she complained about the same thing, So I figured it was time for a tune up, I went to Advance Auto (Big parts place out here) and got the super duper wazoo wires and Bosch Platinums (that was before I read all the posts on them. Life was good for about a month then It started in again, this time it started missing at idle, Every 4-10 seconds it will miss and again it will buck between 25-45 mph. So I got on here and did some reading, and decided to clean my throttle Body, MAF and air inlet temp sensor. Nothing has helped so far. so I gave in and took it to my local ford dealer, They told me that 4.0 ohc motors just run rough after 80k miles. I dont buy that crap for a sec. Does Anybody out there in explorer Land Have any Ideas? I am fresh out!!. By the way, Not getting a Check Engine light and no codes were ever stored in the PCM Thanks in advance for your help guys

Sorry I can't directly help you but I can relate. My 4.0 OHV has always missed at idle, and I've literally replaced almost every single part that affects the engine operation. I am almost convinced now as these motors get old, they get rough :(

However, make sure that your SOHC Owner notification programs are taken care of. If your intake manifold o-rings have not been replaced through the program, you should have that done even though your already over the 72K mile limit that Ford has set for it. I could definitely see the o-rings causing an engine miss.

Check for leaks in the intake. Right after putting my K&N FIPK back on, I went fourwheeling down a pretty rough road. When I got back to the pavement, I started thowing random mis-fire codes on all cylinders. I found that my MAF came lose from the intake hose. I tightened everything back up and all is well. Your Ford dealer is full of crap about the "all SOHCs run rough after 80K". My '97 SOHC will be turning over 100K in 500 miles and still runs as smoothly as the day I bought it with 20 miles on it.
