I have a 96 exploder sport and in the hot weather it makes a rather weird noise. It is a constant rather high pitched tone, it reminds me of a tuning fork. Its rather loud and I think it is the mass airflow sensor but i cannot see how it can be making so much noise. I have a K&N airfilter i dunno if that helps. any ideas?

I have a noise similar to what you are describing. My problem is the Idle Air Control valve. The noise resonates out to the air box and I can hear it most there. I know its the IAC valve because when I tap on it, it changes the noise or stops it.

ah, im gonna assume its not really a problem. just an annoyance more than anything else?

Not necessarally a problem at the moment, but it will become one in the future when it finally goes. They're not very expensive, can be found at most major auto parts stores, and easy as cake to replace. I just haven't had the time to do mine yet.

iac valve

what will happen when the iac valve goes out?And what does the vehicle start doing to warn you it is ready to go out. Thanks alot guys Brad in Iowa

Im not sure what will happen but im sure you wont get a warning. If the name of its any idicator id imagine youd have trouble idling or something. The truck might stall out when you stop.

It makes a really high pitched noise that sounds like a tuning fork. :)

ok mine is making the same noise. so how much do u think it would run to get it fixed or should i attemp it myself? i have no idea what an iac is...

Well

The IAC valve is the
Idle Air Control Valve.

It is the same unit found on most ford V-6's 86 +

You can clean it with carb cleaner, it's easy.

Take it off the intake manifold with the two 8mm bolts.
remove the wire clip
unscrew (2 phillips) the electronic sensor from the mechanical valve body
take the mechanical vavle body and spray the hell out of it with carb cleaner.
Turn the valve around and around so you can get at all sides of the piston
Use Q tips to get the hard to reach stuff.
Make sure you open and close the vavle several times while cleaning and drying.
let it dry completely.
Re-install, you can even cut a new gasket for it if you ruined the old one.

Thats all the service these baby's require. there is no reason to buy a new one, it's a simple little spring actuated valve.

I clean mine probably once a year, along with the mass air sensor and throttle body, but then I'm a fanatic.

Cleaning the MAS and IAC will really smooth out any rough idle that your 4.0L may develop.

Oh yeah be sure to reset the computer by disconnecting the - battery terminal for 30 seconds. Any time you change the reading a sensor will be feeding the computer (A dirty MAS sends a different signal then a clean one) you should re-set the CPU.

Good luck!

where to buy?

I am also in need of a IAC and after I cleaned the unit, I noticed a dramatic difference in sound.

WHere is the best price to buy online? Anybody?

It's defintely the IAC valve.

THat sound is a crapped out IAC. Mine did the same thing. I replaced the valve, and the sound was gone. Many other people have had the exact same problem. Do a search for "Howling Explorer" to see another thread for this problem. THere is actually a national backorder for this part. None of the auto part stores had it, and they couldn't order it because it was all out. My Ford dealership had one left, so I bought it. Try the carb cleaner on it. I heard it usually works.
