So I took my new ride to the Castrol Express for an oil change (I don't think the previous owner changed it) and I ask
" do you have someone that drive a stick"

"No, why do you ask that"

"Cause that's stick shift and I don't want my clutch burnt out"

"Man you joshin me ain't no Explorer standards"

"Ok whatever you think but you burn it your replacin it cause I asked beforehand"

"You better drive it in then"

Pulled in, got out.

Manger said "I be damned a 5speed Explorer, hey guys you ever seen one deez"

Lol bout 5 minutes later they said it was ready walked up and it was locked with the key in the ignition!!! Lucky I had stopped and got a spare made this morning. Some reason my doors lock when you shut them anyone else got a Explorer doin that?

never heard of it doing that.. My explorer will open from the inside even when the door is locked though, which i find annoying. and either way if you lock you keys in dont you still have the keypad to be able to get in? unless your battery was dead...

Mine was doing that to me today, every time I would close the door the friggin door would lock on me. it was running, but thankfully I had a spare, and know the key code. after working today though, it stopped doing it. Weird.

my daughter's 1999 Mustang does this. i think it's because it has an aftermarket security system installed in it. PITA! it's broke down right now, with a clogged catalytic converter and i told her to scrap it because i refuse to work on that POS. everytime you turn your back on it, it will lock you out and/or the alarm is going off for no reason.

Yeah, Explorers come with auto locks from the factory. Many owners disable them.

You need to complete this procedure fairly quickly, but here you go. Koda, your daughter's mustang should be the same... though, that alarm sounds pretty annoying.

Get in the truck, shut all the doors.

Turn the key to the on position without starting the vehicle and press the unlock button 3 times

turn the key off and press the button 3 more times

Turn the key to the on position. The horn should chirp.

Press the unlock button again, and the horn should chirp again. If it beeps twice at this point, you have to start over.

Turn the key off and the horn should chirp again.

OR

If you know the code for your door. enter your code, then hold 6/7 press 3/4 then release the 6/7 and the horn should beep confirming you disabled the auto lock.

My explorer did it when I first got it... it pissed me off. Didn't take me long to scour the internets and the owner's manual to find out how to disable it. Enjoy.

This is extremely helpful! Thanks for that.

Mine does not have the key pad, wish it did they are nice. I'll just keep a spare key in my wallet atleast I know when I shut the door it's locked. It also has an alarm but it had been disabled because they lost the remotes.
I really found it weird they didn't know the Explorer came in a stick shift! Ford just recently cut the option off their truck line(went on the site and did the "build your ford" only automatic tranny on all the trucks! That sucks gurss I'll never own or "Hit the ground runnin in a New Ford Truck" lol

They were uncommon in even 1st gens. Too many soccer mom sales = no interest in stick shifts

OP, perhaps you have a wiring issue in the door that is closing, like a "shiner" in the wiring loom.

Could be I only paid 1400 for the truck, it runs great but both front fenders are dented, liftgate dented bad, and only the driver door unlocks with the key so it probbably was swapped, the liftgate won't lock or unlock with the switch I have to crawlin and unlock it then lock it back manually, I got some work to do but that's the part I enjoy gettin alone and workin on a truck! Best part is NOONE lent me money to help get this one so NOONE can say that I can't make a mod I want! I have a 03 Montana van my inlaws forked a loan for and they even complaine when I don't wash it but the motor finally blew thats why I got the Explorer it's 200% all mine so it may get bagged and dropped!

Grounding Problem

This problem can also occur if the security harness wiring grounds to the frame with a worn-out wire. I found mine next to the emergency brake release. Taped it, secured it, and problem gone!
