So, I was driving around listening to my iPod last week...

I stepped out of the truck to buy beer at the supermarket and when I got back in, the cabin was filled with smoke and the flip-down cigarette lighter was on fire... the heat from a splitter I was using for my ipod's power melted out the inside of the 12 source. I put the fire out quickly and vented the car, but the extra outlet which flips down next to the ash tray wont work (surprise).

Do these come assembled or will I have to "redneck engineer" one?

Your fuse is toast.

I doubt that... if the fuse blew then the thing wouldn't have caught fire. I'll check it, but I'm not optimistic. Would be easier than replacing the assembly.

Do you know if the fuse is in the inside fuse panel, and is it separate from the fuse for the cig lighter in the console- because that outlet is still working.

thats really strange. you sure there wasn't another piece of metal in the socket with your ipod charger?

Nah, i just had a splitter in there for the charger and an FM modulator. The splitter completely melted.

do you know the max volts of your fried splitter?

Cant remember off-hand where its at. Sometimes they double with other accessories. Just might want to look them all over. 12V is rather hot. It could easily catch fire before it blows the fuse. If there is no fire damage to the original outlet I am almost positive it would be a fuse.

Good luck.

csmicfool,
was your ipod charger from belkin? I had one from them that caught fire in my boat for no apparent reason.

I had something similar happen to me.. I had my power invertor hard wired to my battery with a fuse within 6" of the battery. Driving down the road with Spas & Savage Wolf to meet with Monmix, my truck catches on fire. The wires somehow touched which caused a small fire to erupt in my rear passenger floor & mat. The fuse didn't blow oddly enough. I was using a 15 AMP fuse so it should have blown but it didn't. I took all the wiring out and re-wired it with a new fuse holder. After it happened I double checked the resistance on the old wire and oddly enough it was normal. I suspect it must have been some sort of oddity. Definately check the wiring cause chances are the wiring has been damaged in the process of your fire. Just remove the upper part of the center console and check the wires for any signs of damage.
