I have a 1995 XLT and right know I get really bad gas mileage. I get about 200 to 240 miles to a tank. is that normal or is that bad. If it is bad can you please help me out by telling me what I can do to my explorer to make it more gas efficient and, possibly more powerful. thank you very much

for the biggest improvement, get a new exhaust
Check out the group buy forum for the Borla exhaust purchase. There is no longer a group buy, but you will read how to get a Borla for your model X. It will cost $165.00 I installed mine a couple of weeks ago and am getting 4 more miles per gallon.
If you have any questions on getting the Borla AFTER READING THE THREAD, contact me or 95XLT. We should be able to help you with any problems.
Also look for a thread by me about installing my Borla. It will help you quite a bit on telling you what parts to order and what is involved in the installation.

for slight improvements
new plugs any brand name, just make sure they're double platinum
new wires I suggest Champion Truck Wires, costly but well worth it
new air filter I suggest K&N, again costly but worth it
new fuel filter
new O2 sensors wouldn't hurt either, but will cost you
run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through the system

Whatever you do, reset the computer after the changes to get the best results.

thank you very much for your input. I will definitely look into the borla exhaust. another question. will the sound of my exhaust be deeper then the stock. if so how much deeper. I would like it to be pretty deep but I would also like to get better fuel per gallon. thanks a bunch

The Borla sounds deeper and a little bit louder. It's not so loud that it will drive you crazy on a long drive though. It sounds a lot better than I had expected and I am VERY pleased with it.

where did you get your borla and how much was it?

here's how to get a Borla

a quote by 95XLT from the group buy forum
yob_yeknom recently contacted me saying he found these systems from Ford Racing. He had ordered one, and it is in fact a true Borla system with all the same stuff as the one we were goping to purchase. So far I have only confirmed that it is available for 95 and 96 4 door trucks. I ordered mine yesterday and I should have it friday they said. The place who I delt with was http://www.ramchargers.com on their web site it says free shipping in the continental US. They told my dad they had over 150 of these Borla systems in stock and ready to ship. We only checked to make sure the 95 4 door system was there, but you guys may want to give them a call. Here is the best part...the price: $165....yes that is no typo, but it is $165 and it said free shipping!! When you call make sure you ask fo rthe Ford Racing cat-back system. Here is the 95/96 part number for the 4 door:
part# M-5200-FA
Hopefully this helps you all!

Thanks again yob_yeknom!!

If you have any more questions read a thread in the group buy forum on a Borla group buy. It is no longer a group buy (it fell through) but has the information on how to get a Borla for your X. If you still need more help just ask.
It cost $165.00

their is a faq page and it says it costs .60 per mile to operate our explorers. my mom and i get about that mileage me 1994 her 1996 i think it is normal. these suckers (gas and money, pun intended :) )are not cheap for good fuel economy get a little beater car with a 4 banger

Can that possibly be right? I travel around 200 miles a week AT LEAST. There is no way I'm spending $120 a week just to ride around. Maybe $18 on gas for 200 miles, but where is the other $102?

well it all depends on gas price. I live in Sacramento and gas here cost around $1.79 a gallon for the cheap stuff

Opperating Cost

I'm sure that .60 per mile includes some wear & tear on the vehicle. Know what I mean, Vern? LOL

The average operating costs for a vehicle include (besides gas) all wear and tear on tires, brakes etc. It also includes regular scheduled maintenance (oil changes plus other maintance as specified in the operator manual), insurance, licenses and fees and depreciation.

All these other costs are significantly higher than gas.

Assuming you spend $30,000 on your explorer total for the whole time you have it (very low estimate) and you drive it for 100,000 miles, it costs about $.30 per mile to own an explorer... Ouch...

Assuming 17mpg average and $1.40 / gal gas it cost 8.2 cents per mile to feed (a.k.a. gas) an Explorer. I'm not sure how they estimate the $0.60 per mile

Assuming 15,000 miles per year, 17mpg, and $1.40 gas that would be ~$1200 / year in gas. 5 oil changes at ~$20 / piece is another $100. Assuming another $200 for various other maintenence thats ~$1500 / year over initial cost and assuming nothing else goes wrong... get a warranty...

Therefore for my explorer with ~$20000 initial cost + $1500 per year for 6.6 years (100000miles\15000 per year) will cost me ~$.30 / mile to operate assuming I have no costs out of the ordinary and purchase no accesories and/or other 'stuff'.

Once again I think the $.60 per mile estimate is a little high unless you get load up on accessories which then becomes a 'hobby' and not true vehicle cost per mile.

That's what I was wondering.
