Hello, I have a 2014 Explorer.

I tried it fill it with gas but the hole was blocked...by a metal part. What can I do first, before taking it to a dealer?

Thanks!

Hi Bill. Are you referring to the metal flap on the filler tube that the pump nozzle pushes against to gain entry?

Peter

It's supposed to have that flapper, it's part of the capless fueling system.

Gas pump nozzles are the correct size to open the flapper valve. If you're trying to refill from another source, a fuel can perhaps, you must use the adapter funnel. See your owner's manual for specifics.

Peter,
Yes!
Is this your first 5th gen Explorer? As gbe .embet above posted, tbat flap is part of the capless fuel system. It is referenced in the Owner's Manual. All you bave to do is o sert the nozzle and it will ̀
push the flap out of the way.

I don't see a reply to the post above if you submitted one.

Hello ProjectSHO89,

Attached are photos of the problem. The "flapper valve" is either missing or stuck. I couldn't make it move at all.

The dealer wants $149 just to diagnose the problem......yikes!

Hi Bill. Thanks for the reply. If you tried to open the flap using your finger or some tool, that won't work. You need to insert the pump nozzle or the special filler tube that should likely be in with your spare tire. Those will open the flap. The yellow ring indicates that you have a flex fuel Explorer that will run on regular gasoline or E85 fuel.
It's all explained in your Owner's Manual.

Peter,

Thanks. I'll look for the nozzle with the spare tire.

The funnel stored with the spare tire worked! Thank you very much!

That means the pump nozzle should also work to open the flap. I'm guessing this is your first experience with the capless fuel system.
It is designed this way to prevent the average person from getting access to the fuel, although it can be defeated if you know how.

Peter

If you look down into the neck of the filler tube, you'll see two or three "fingers" above the flapper valve.

When you insert the nozzle or the adapter funnel, those "fingers" are pushed outwards and the underside of the fingers release from under the flapper allowing it to rotate downwards on its hinge, allowing the nozzle or funnel to be inserted fully.
