Gas door - Spring

So I noticed my gas door felt a little funny - so I reached a finger inside, and touched the spring, which then popped off..

Anyone got any tips/tricks to get that little booger back in there?

Otherwise, I'm going to have to use velcro or something to keep it shut.. lol

same thing happened to me

my 01 had the same thing happen. Door felt funny and next thing I know, it wont stay closed.

I ended up taking the wheel liner out (a bunch of screws along the wheel lip and christmas trees to the frame hold it on). Then a couple more screws on the fuel filler tube. The housing comes out from underneath, once you free up some tabs.

I found that the hole that the spring goes into had been worn larger to the point that it fell out. I had to use a dremel with a small drill bit to make a new hole next to the old one and reinstalled the spring.

It closes now, but because the new hole wasn't in the best spot, it doesn't snap closed like before, but it does stay closed.

Sorry I don't have any pics or more detail, but this happened about a year ago...

Yeah, after I got into it, I felt pretty dumb, but now every time I fill up, I'm glad I did it. Took about an hour...

I hate when all the small problems start to build up on a daily driver.
