Hey guys. I have had my 1991 Explorer for 2 years and the gas gauge has never worked. Now I know someone is going to say that the float is the problem but the float has been replaced. I just had keyless entry and remote starter installed. Whenever something electrical is on when the remote starter starts the car the gas gauge moves to about half a tank and I believe that this reading is right because I have gone 150 miles on this tank. Anything else it could be? Maybe a fuse or a bad connection either behind the dash or somewhere else?

so are you saying for the past 2 yearts the gas gauge had not been working but since you had the keyless entry installed the gas gauge is working now?

if you are 100% sure that it is not the float then i would check the fuse and breakers (i forgot which one it is, do you have a chilton or haynes?) then the relay behind the dash. If none are those are it, it might, keyword might, be something with the return line. my bet would be the relay though.

It only works when the remote starter is on but at soon as I put the key in to drive off it drops down to E. Its weird, very weird. I just noticed it today.

yea that is strange. so before you put in the remote stater, it wasnt working at all, correct.

correct. I really think it is electrical now. I am going to take the dash apart tomorrow and see if there is a bad connection or fuse or relay somewhere. Would you happen to know if there is?

its probably to late casue you already did all of this, but check the fuses first make sure its not that, then i would check the relay and conections for the gas gauge.

I read through the owners manual and I can't find a fuse for the gauge or a relay for it. Where would this be at. I know where the fuse panel and the block is under the hood. I'm just not quite sure which fuse or relay it is.

i looked through my chilton manual and there is not a fuse in box under the steering wheel for the instrament gauges. And they dont list the 1st gen distribution box under the hood, only the 95-99 ranger and explorer. but if my memory serves me i think that the distribution box under the hood has the fuses labled under the lid of the box. ill check in the morning.

mine hasnt worked since i had it either and its been 2 years... i had my sylinoid go out about 6 months ago and it would work when the key was on the on possition but as soon as you start it went to E... also when u hammer on the gas a few time while drivin it works but as soon as the trucks shut off and u start it back up again its back to its normal position E...
