Gas gauge

My gas gauge shows empty. I know it isn't empty, so I filled tank to the stopper. It still shows empty. Any ideas what it could be?

could be the fuel level sensor or something with the wiring.

The gas gauge on my '03 XLS went bad after the vehicle was past warranty. It would sometimes stick on empty after a fill-up, and take 12 hrs or so to level off and read correctly. Happened mostly in cold weather, but not all the time. I just lived with the problem, and was vigilant about resetting the trip mileage when it happened.
