1991 explorer 4wd xlt ......For the last couple of days I have been smelling a very strong smell of gasoline aroud the truck i can not figureout where it is coming from. It seems to be comming from under the truck. Any suggestions or ideas we to beggin to look? I do not see any noticeable leaks or stains but the smel is always there. I am afraid it could become dangerous at some point. I will appreciate any comments or suggestions.
Thanks
George

Fuel smell

I have heard that the smell comes from the fuel pressure control valve, I guess it gets a crack in the diaphram and somehow ( I can't figure it out)
vapors get out of the closed system.

I have the same problem and first thing people say who have eXplorers is to check the fuel filter especially if it has been changed recently. It has something to do with the way it fits properly. Hope this helps.

hello all I also have a 91 explorer that has the same smell to it , It seems to be real present in the heat, I have checked the fuel filter and have changed it, I also have looked at the fuel cap, I have had no luck. This dosnt seem to hurt fuel mielage so I havent been to worried about it. but it is odd yet helpful to know there are other 91's out there with the same problem, Sorry no help!!!

thank you

Yeah, this is wierd, I was under the truck this morning checking everything and could not see anything that may seem wrong. I am also glad to hear that I am not the only one with this issue. I hope this is nothing serious. It has not chaged the mileage at all and it just started this summer. ....??????

The 1st gen. X's, especially those in the north where saft is used extensively in the winter, are prone to having the metal lines on top of the fuel pump rust out.

If there is a strong smell of fuel back around the rear tire/fuel filler area, check for fuel stains along the side of the tank or the big shield below the tank.

I had to replace the fuel pump on my 91 and my 93.
