gas tank size

ok. i bought my explorer a while ago and every time i fill it up ... i stare in awe. its never more then like 25 or so, and this is with current gas prices. i have a 91 XLT, but i have no owners manual. anyone know what size the tank is ?

I have a 96 4 door and mines roughly 21 gallons. I'm pretty sure the earlier models are about the same.

i know the 4 door models are 21, and the 2 door models are about 18gallons.

According to my "big book" the first generation explorers (early ones.. 1990 etc) have a 19.6 gallon tank (that is what Ford said).. as to how much you can fit in there.. 21 easily..

I think mine is 19 gallons completly full and mine is a 91.

My owners manual, Haynes, Chiltons, & alldata CD say my '91 xlt is 19.3 gal. The most I've ever had to put in running well below "E" is 18.7.

Mike, I'd like to know how you fit 21 gallons into a 19 gallon tank.

you can fill it up into the tube, that'll get you close to a gallon. when the nozzle clicks off, i can still get in like 3 bucks worth ... really not that much with these gas prices tho.

The fill capacity is the capacity of the Tank.. you can also fill the fill tube. If your cap doesnt seal well you will leak gas easier if you fill the tube (the cap shouldn't leak)..

Our 1963 Galaxy fill tube holds over 2 gallons.. I haven't spent the time to figure out the volume of the fill tube for the explorer (too much thinking) but it is over 1 gallon.. possibly 2 (not sure)..

On my '97, the manual says 21.something but I've put 26.2 in it. That's right to the top of the fill tube.

Today I filled up ($50.24) and put in 24.7 gallons.

I've put 23 into my '99 and the check guage light wasn't even on yet.

I've put 22 in my stock 21 gallon tank on the 99 XLT and 20 in the stock 19 gallon tank in the 98 Sport.
