I bought an 04 Sport Trac recently and when I try to gas it up, it clicks off after a couple of seconds. It's not the pump and it's not the angle of the pump handle. I've read some things online about spiders and bugs closing off the vent line from the charcoal canister that can cause this to happen. Anyone else have any experience with how to fix this? I'd like to see if I can fix it before taking in to the shop. It's getting annoying taking 15 minutes to fill the tank.

Thanks,
Frito

I have that same issue 3months back, it keep Shutting off on my truck (10 times). I checked the vent valve and vent hose both are ok. I tried the Stp multipurpose cleaner in my gas tank. I used it only once and never shut off again when refuelling.

Have you verified that yours is actually plugged up by bugs/debris?

Check to make sure your fuel inlet hose to the tank is not kinked and that nothing is down inside clogging it up.

All the lines are closed going to the fuel vapor canister filter assembly located over the spare tire (by the way, you DON'T drop the fuel tank to get to it). The fuel vapor canister assembly is held up by five 13mm bolts.

In this pic there is a small port that is open, but nothing connects to it. Fuel vapors or tank pressure do not come out of it. It did have debris from bugs in it, but did not affect anything at all.

Thanks Helmut Roner for the photos. This will help a lot. Did you have a fueling problem with yours? Did you have to replace your fuel vapor canister, and if so why? Thanks again for your help.

No fueling problem with mine. I did not do anything with the fuel vapor canister assembly. I had to lower it out of the way to get to the top left shock absorber nuts.

I had lowered my fuel tank to replace the fuel pump and took pics along the job. I accidentally broke the new fuel pump during the reinstallation, so, sadly I had to reinsert the factory pump. At the time of my typing this the new pump is here, but have to wait for the shop on the air force base by me to open so I can install it.
