Gass guage is out of commision?? what could be wrong?

Hey everyone,

So recently my gass guage decided to go on my 91 explorer 4x4..

I'm not exactly sure what could be the problem.. Is there some sort of sensor unit somewhere up near the gas tank that i can replace from a junk yard that might do the trick?? or maybe a fuse somewhere?

anyone else have this go on them?

Could be the sensor (that's in the tank) or the gauge. The gauge just has prongs on the end of it that you push in to the cluster. I'd try a new gauge first. I think there's a way to test the sensor too. Maybe run a search.

maybe i'll rip apart a dash on a junk yard vehicle this weekend and see how it's made.. and maybe if it makes sense that that might be the problem.. i'll rip apart my dash

Can I assume it's always reading empty? That's what mine did. After removing the tank and sending unit, I found the float was full of gas. I removed it, drilled a hole to empty contents, JB welded it, and put it back in. Took most of an 8-5 day. It worked fine for about 2 weeks, but today it decided to go back to empty. I am also using my trip meter to know about when to fill up. Then later, it decided to read okay again and went back to half. According to my trip meter, half would be an accurate reading. This evening, it quit again! I have ruled out the JB wled failing, and I assume it's in the electronics or wiring.

I suggest buying the entire assembly from Ford since you can't buy only the float. A used float may suffer the same fate. JB weld is said to resist gasoline and fuel, but I'm not promising anything.

The float in mine was brass, so I simply re-soldered it, filling the new holes/cracks.

I indeed wanted mine brazed, but my local mechanic that does welding and such and pulled an Explorer tank for me long ago said the float was not serviceable

Being my dad's a plumber, I should have made something copper out of maybe 1'', using a minimum with two caps or improvised some other way like that.

Would fuel in the float cause it to not read all the way full?

I can fill up, but it gets almost full but never there. It also tells me I'm empty about 4 1/2 to 5 gals too soon....

Thats good I guess, but would like it to read correctly.

If there is fuel in the float, it would cause the float to sink, and would read empty. Maybe not all empty, because when my gauge began to act up again, it was reading like 1/3 full when I know for sure the tank was near full.
