I have a 1999 Explorer 4x4.
It goes into gear fine and all.
But the selector on the steering column when in park its almost in the R and when in revers its in N and so on.
how can I adjust it?

There is a small cable that runs from the shifter to the PRNDL indicator. Its got an adjuster wheel on it. Pull the dash panel under the column and you should be able to find it.

There are some good threads in the archives that discuss how its done. I had to do it eons ago and it's pretty simple when all is said and done.

torx bolts

I had a problem with my 98 not starting unless you put pressure on the gear selector to force it further in park. tried adjusting cable with no luck. Turned out to be two torx bolts that hold the cable bracket to the steering column came loose and allowed slack in the cable. If you lay on your back and look underneath the dash with a light you can see them. It's worth at least checking.
