If you mean a 5 speed manual tranny, it should pull straight off.

Sorry, 5 speed.

Is there any thread on the stick at all? If you just pull it off, what exactly is holding the knob on the stick?

I tried pulling on the Gear Shift Knob (by hand & hard), but how hard do you have to pull? Maybe the previous owner put on some loktight? Can I damage anything on the manual shift by yanking on it too hard? Also, do you think I can or should use something like a vice grip to pull the knob off the shift?

Many Thanks

If I remember right, the shifter is splined, and is 'male', and the shift knob is splined and 'female'. The splines just grip each other, I think.

Mine first came off during a "panic shift" whike offroading. I went to drop it into second in a white-knuckle situation, and adrenaline helped pull the knob right off!

Has anyone installed a classis Hurst "T" shifter or a pistol grip and their Ranger 5 speed?
