gears?

Sorry I haven't been on in awhile. Works been really busy lately. There are calculators you can find online that you can use to calculate the gear ratio you will need. Randy's ring and pinion I believe has a calculator you can use to determine the closest ratio you will need after swapping to larger tires. Figure your ratio for what you will be using your truck for, if its off road only get a taller ratio, if its highway use a majority of the time like mine then go with a moderate ratio. I am about to re-gear mine to keep it close to stock but going a little higher to gain a little more torque.

oof made me kringe thinking of that... you "could" i sure wouldnt recommend it. Unless you stay below 50mph.... be a hell of a red light racer tho... and sip on gas around town

I ran 235/75r15s with 4.56s for a few days. I think my top speed in first gear was 20MPH... That was bouncing off the rev limiter.

The down and dirty answer would be, basically click off your OD and that is 31s with 456s.

yea that wouldnt be really all that effective for sure. ima get tires and geras then do it all at one time 4.56s with 33s sounds reasonable

I had 4.56 with 30" tires for 4 or 5 months. It was a racecar and didn't really like to go above 70 mph. 4.56 with 33" tires seem like a great combo- nice diameter to roll over rocks, yet not big enough to lose any low end grunt. I can still go over paved mountain passes (11,000 feet and above) and exceed the speed limit if I wanted without working the motor hard.

yea v6 4.o OHV 4x4 wwith 3.73 8.8 ford gears in it now.

what would happen if i went to 33 or 35 and didnt change gears? i assume it wouldnt be good!

I rode on 33s and 31s for over a year without regearing. Not too much difference until your pulling something.
Got 35s now and still haven't regeared yet. That's when it gets sketchy. Waiting for 4.56s

i have a v8 AWD... i will be buying 33's soon, can you regear an AWD? if so is it something i can do myself? or should i take it to a shop? what kind of price we looking at?

Yes you can regear the axles under a V8- they are the same axles under the V6s.

While it's not hard, it does take some know-how to set up the backlash right. I'm a person who does all the wrenching possible on my vehicles and I paid someone to do my regear. He got it done in a day (the same guy who is building Lazyboy SAS, Merc, Rock Ranger, TNT.....), but he's also done a few dozen on these and knows his way around under an Explorer. But that's not to say that it was a breeze for him. When I paid him, I felt like my money was well spent after watching him do it.

If you have the ability to let the truck sit up on jackstands for a couple days, I would consider doing it myself if I had to again. Luckily, I think I went big enough on my gear to not need to.

I believe it was $850- and that included the new gears. He kept my old gears (3.55) and probably sold them on ebay- Mustang guys will snatch them up. I should have kept them and sold them myself.

Okay. And to my original question not worried about the v8 more the awd.also was it really worth regear? I'm only going to max out at 33's

Depends on what gears you have now and what you plan on doing with the truck.

4.56 gears with 33" tires is approximately equal to a stock size tire (29") with 4.10 gears.

I started with 3.55 gears. Those with 33" tires would put me down around 3.10 ratio. With that kind of ratio my engine and transmission would be heavily strained while I tow or 4wheel. I don't regret getting the gears I got at all.

okay thanks. yea i have no clue what my stock gears are. but i dont really tow. and its awd so im always four wheeling lol

You can find your gear ratio on the manufacturing sticker in the drivers door jamb. It will have a section called axle ratio and then you can use google to find what it means exactly.
