Get my explorer towed

It’s a hard to say. A junkyard motor could fail at any time. That motor is *probably* fine if you don’t expect a ton of service life out of it.

If your transmission is on its last legs it’s tough to justify any motor, really.

Is your motor not repairable?

Why not rebuild the current engine or rebuild a junkyard engine?
I think that is what the guy did, repair a junk yard engine.

Yeah i know it's hard to justify $1500 for a 2005 explorer. I guess the transmission could have 20-30k miles left so it is not crappy but it isn't brand new ( shifts good just jerks a little if i put it in gear). The thing is that i like the truck and it has no rust problems (florida). I was looking at used cars too but anything for 5k or less it's falling apart.

No i don't think it's repairable the motor locked up. I got it cheap so i had to fix some stuff up (1 new wheel bearing, fixed a small radiator leak, new thermostat, new solenoid pack, 2 new tires), the bones are good no rust at all.

What do you mean with "not a ton of serviceable life" i would be ok with 30-50k miles, to you think that 50k are reasonable?

Oh also, at the moment i could get somewhere between $ 300-500 for the explorer, with that engine i could get $2000+. So i thought i will fix it, drive it for some time (or drive it in the ground) and if i find a good deal on another car i could buy it.

Hello i need my explorer to be towed for ~50 miles. The towing companies want between $500-$1200 for the job. I wonder if i can tow the explorer myself if i rent and F150 or something else? Any help will be very appriciated. Thanks guys
I know this is an older thread but thought I'd let everyone know that we successfully used an F-250 equipped only with a tow bar to tow home our 2003 Explorer xlt 4.6L V8, total distance was 46 kilometers. Now I read earlier about there possibly being issues "buddy towing" a 4x4 so I.should point out that upon taken possession of our truck we noticed the kid who previously owned it must have came down extremely hard off roading as the rear diff is basically broken into pieces, so only 2wd on our tow. However, as tow bars are not exactly legal in our province nor is sitting in a vehicle while it is being towed, we opted to cramp into the f250 and depend upon its power and brakes to get the job done which it did no problem. We didnt even have power in the Explorer yet so besides temporarily hooking up a battery just to allow us to start it (electronic furl pump and all) and put it into neutral, the f-250 did all the work on some pretty cold and icy Atlantic Canadian Winter roads. I should mention that one leg of the run was down a steep incline known locally as the "Bull Run" referring of course to the gear truckers must use just to make it up this beast of a 5 km hill. Well we didnt climb it, we came down it and if ever our tow bar or anything else was gonna fail it was gonna be then and as I've said...success!! Now just have to change the power steering pump as the pin is sheared off inside. Then replace the serpentine belt and lastly I need to swap out my starter. So far my bf reached inside passenger wheel well with the handle of our floor jack and taps the starter/solenoid while I crank her over but just noticed today after buying a new starter that it's likely only an issue with the wire coming off the solenoid as it was frayed and barely connected.
Last problem..
In the 2 wks since I brought it home shes become embedded in ice...all the way up to the rear control arms. I meansolid ice is up to the upper bolts on my 31" super swampers lol

Sounds like a terrible idea.

Yeah i know it's hard to justify $1500 for a 2005 explorer.

Well these days it would be pretty easy to justify $5,000 on it since you would not find any decent vehicle under $10,000 these days.
