getting out of 4x4

In order to get out of 4wd I have to put my x into reverse then drive. Does anyone else have this problem? It can get to be annoying especially when i have a tailgater and i want to go into 2wd.
On another note, I beat my friend while in 4wd, he has a 96' explorer with 2wd on. Should I be proud?

i used to have to do that in my 91.

r u saying that you need to back up to disengage the transfer case or r u talking about unlocking the hubs, if u r talking about the hubs then yes you have to backup to unlock them

all i know is i have to do it so there's no power to my front tires and my rear tires slip a little.
