GHETTO COLD AIR INDUCTION

I'd just get a black mesh grating like used in screen doors and glue it to the inside of the bumper out of view. The hard mesh wont get tore by bugs, but it will let more moisture in, but like said before, it shouldnt be a problem as long as theres plenty of curves and stuff in it.

you could also get wheel spacers for a wider stance, i found 4cm spacers online for about $25 a piece, they would look funny on stock tires, but much better on larger ones

was reading about the 12.5" tires. well i wouldnt put them on the stock width wheel they are only 7" wide. you are likely to rip the tires of the bead if you go around a corner too fast( i used to be 17 too). and to check the math on the widening of the tires.... if the tires are 2" wider than the stock ones then that width would be distributed evenly from the center of the wheel. so it would be 1" on each side of the wheel that would make the overall width of the stance 2" wider than stock. actually in my experiance with tires you get the best wear and peformance if the tread is the same width or just slightly bigger than the width of the wheel. the mods you are talking about doing are going to change the way your vehicle handle and it will raise the center of gravity quite noticeably. you will have a suspention geometry and design that was meant for 235/75/15 tires and the lower center of gravity. the sway bar and springs are set for that and the new center of gravity and wider tires are going to cause the suspention to bounce back faster than stock. this could cause you to loose control of the vehicle if you are not prepared. your steering inputs will be slower as well due to the wider tires. im not trying to rain on your parade but i dont think what you are wanting to do is such a good idea. if you want to lift your car you should look into a suspention lift. you should get new springs and sway bar too to preserve the proper suspension properties and geometry. it is more expensive but you dont run into the problems that body lifts cause. im not saying that you would run into these but some people do: wireing clearances, steering linkage binding, exaust alignment could cause problems, brake lines binding or breaking, and the unsightly frame that is already quite prevlant on explorers. these are just my opinions though, others will have different.

looks like some of the threads are getting twisted...software problem anyone?

Well back to the ghetto cold air induction. I think the funnel idea is great. I am thinking about putting 2 funnels in the open space on my bumper and running hoses to my KKM. The KKM is open at the end. If I ran a hose straight into the KKM's opening do you think I would be forcing in some more air? Or does it suck in more air if it is left open? any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I had the same thoughts. My friends dodge ram has the filter charger set up. He put a hose (without a funnel) on it the other day. But the same idea applies, as long as you can "blow" cold air across it, it will give some performance gains. Also, i have a dual set up. I have two different hoses attached to two different funnels. I did this for two reasons, 1. I has some "inner" confidence that it was working 2. Allow for more air flow. Now trust me, at 35 miles an hour your engine isn't sucking that much air down. I think that the more you gun it, the more it sucks. So in effect, when you gun it, depending on how fast you are going, will determine how much air is blowing into your filter and thus improving performance.
Lets say you were going 35 miles per hour at 1500 RMP. Your engine isn't sucking a whole lot of all that air down. But your funnels are taking in a whole lot and "offering" it to your engine. Here is where you won't notice much (i did notice i can cruise at slower RPMS). But when you gun it, the air you "offer" your engine is sucked up like crazy and you have "cold air induction".
If anyone thinks i am wrong about this interpolation, please let me know. I have been known from time to time to have a "warped" sense of what actually is happening. If this doesn't make sense i'll try and explain it again.

hey turds! lets see some pics :D but anyway, i just did a little ghetto work too, i took off that flat plastic peice behind the headlight that covers the intake, dont know if it helped at all but it couldn't have hurt.

I can't get you guys pics until Saturday. I found someone with a scanner. I painted them black so they are VERY hard to see now. My mom came in from walking today and asked me "where did your vaccuum hose thingies go, did you take them off?" So they are hard to see. USE ACRYLLIC PAINT WHEN PAINTING, everything else peels off. I also had to cut part of my airbox out to make room to have two hoses going into it, blowing straight into the filter.

I was going to build the same exact contraption about a month ago (well, not with 6 funnels, maybe 2), but never got around to it. Where did you get the funnels and what size are they? I couldn't find anything at Home Depot...no good funnels and not much hose selection. I can check Lowes the next time I am in the area I guess.

How did you attach the funnels to the opening in the airdam?

Hey! I got all my stuff at lowes. Any kind of plastic will work. I attached them to the bumper via screws. Not the most aesthic things to the eyes (especially since i have four holes from my other funnels). But you have to make sure that the funnels are the same size as the hose. Any ol hose will do. I think mine was about 2 inches wide and the other was about three. Hey guys, what is an intercooler?

Intercooler is for Turbo (usually)

The intercooler cools the hot air being forced by the exhaust. The air is forced by exhaust pressure and this cools the air before it gets to the intake, its usually on turbo charged cars, naybe some supercharged but I'm not sure.

has anyone gotten pics of this setup? id love to see it so i could set up something similar

BY FAR the funniest and yet coolest mod I have read about. Bravo Turd!

Who has pics of these funnels and tubes??? I wanna do it!!

well i think it was a good idea and if it helped then cool. just make sure the plastic hoses arnt touching yer radiator and melt. that would just be a mess......... putting the tube up to yer face and the funnel out the window, i might just do that for fun. =D

Where's the pics, this sounds like ingenuity at its best!

Ok for the intercooler.

Most superchargers do NOT come with an intercooler, this is simply becuase most superchargers/g loaders etc are belt driven where TURBO's are exhaut driven , because of the turbo's being exhaust driven this means that the turbo will get hot, if you pin the motor it can at night glow up :), wich is an nice sight, but unfortuanlt how hotter the turbo becomes it will also increase the temp of the intake air that cylces through the other side of the turbo, this is why many manufactures add an intercooler, after the turbo the air will go thru an heat exchanger (the intercooler) and is then forced thru the intake, this will coll the ingoing air down and thus also increase horsepower when the turbo becomes hot.

Turbo's will break 99% of the times becuase of these things :

* not letting it get warm (wich will wear the bearings in it)
* pin the motor up the 6500 rpm , then all of an sudden let off the gas, this will cause the motor to choke for an split second and the oil won't find it's way on the bearing, remeber the turbo get's red hot so even an slight hesitation on the oil delivery is disasterous

but back to the funnels.....i can't wait to see the pics, and it looks like an great idea to me...

hmmm the intercooler thing got me thinking now....it's possible to make something like it, but i'm thinking about placing the MAF sensor cause it would have to be placed AFTER the intercooler, not before....

Hey.... I was thinking about the ghetto ram air awhile ago.. but because I have a relocated air filter and its open air, I figure it was a waste of time... however... have you considered the ghetto intake tube to go with your ghetto ram air? I love my ghetto intake... Its just a piece of 3" PVC with an elbow to the TB. All connections are made with 3" rubber Furnco fittings. Its a straight tube all the way to where my battery used to be... Kinda neato. Of course all of this crap ive done is making me get terrible milage... or a sensor is out again... one of the two.. or both. :)

Oh, yeah, I have a seperate mini air filter that you can pick up at any ricer shop for the valve cover....
