My girlfriend said she would get me a pair of subs for our 2 year anniversary this February 21st!! Sweet!!! So I'm turning to you guys to help me out!

I want to put a pair of 15s in the back of the X, but have heard mixed feelings of 15 inch subs. I remember hearing Leenjen say that many 12s will out hit 15s. So, what are the differences in SQ, response, etc... between 12s and 15s?

When researching for subs before, I started to like Rockford Fostgates and JLs, but when my dad punched in the RF HX2 specs into a boxplot program on the computer, he didnt like the results much. I want a pair of subs that will hit hard at reasonably high volumes (not quite competition level, but you know how teens like our bass :-) ), unlike most of these guys whose subs sound like crap once they turn them up. What make/model subs would meet this criteria?

As always, thanks for helpin' out! I'm excited!!!

Matt

isn't that sweet - i wish you all the best in hard pounding enjoyment:hammer:

Get some JL 12W7's. Those should set your GF back around $450 apiece.:)

Actually, I run 2 10W3's made by JL in the Expo and I'm very happy with them. I used to have 3 10W3's in my Camaro hooked up to an RF POWER 1100 amp and that thing shook the ground to say the least.;)

I just picked up another 10W3 off of Ebay for $120 with free shipping! I bet that same place offers the 12W3 if you decide to go with JL's.

can you get any subs??? if so then get some titanium series eclipse 12's...or get some ecplise 12's they are soooooooooo sick

subs

I have gone for sound quality (still very loud though) in every vehicle I have owned and everyone elses I have worked with.....I have delt with Rockord Fosgate, JL Audio, Alumapro, Eclpise, Alpine Type R, Kicker (CompVR, L7, Solo-baric, Impluse, XPL), Bazooka, Polk, and JBL. Out of all these I would look at Alumapro Alchemy, JL Audio W6s or W7s, or Eclipse 88 series. I currently run (1) Alumapro Alchemy 12" with 350w RMS to it and it is an extremely tight, clear, and loud sub (looks good too...aluminum cone). I heard a JL Audio 13W7 in the back of a Stingray Vette the other day at Ovation in Lexington......DAMN IT WAS BAD ASS!!!!! They are expensive ass hell.so you better start rolling out the red carpet for your woman!

i was running four 15" Orion XTR subs in my explorer until i sold two of the a few months ago. i'm still running 2 of them. they hit really hard and still have excellant clarity at high volumes. they are also really efficient. 200 watts will make them pound. they also wont set you back an arm and a leg.

if your girlfriend is willing to spend more and you want something that could potentially split your front windshield if you crank it, then check out the Audiobahn AW1508X (15") or AW1208X (12").

I just realized I wrote "Girlfriends will get me subs for anniversary" as the subject. Well yes, unfortunately, that's a mistake! Its only one girlfriend.

I forgot to mention $$ restrictions. I think she's willing to throw in about $250, and I'll pick up the tab for anything more than that. So I'm thinking total for 2 subs were looking at between $300-$400? That's not set in stone though, but a good estimate. That should be enough right?

Leenjen, I tried to check out those Orions, but most of these web sites dont give any specs, and many won't give you a price until you order!! What am I looking to spend for the Orions? And do I want the XTR S or the XTR D or even the XTR Pros?

Also, what is the difference between the 12s and 15s?

Matt

if you were to get a pair of the Orion XTR's, then get the XTR D (dual voice coil) so you can wire them @4ohms mono. you can pick up some 12's or 15's for a little over $100 each online. the zeb was selling the 15's for about $150. the XTR PROs are a lot more money but they do slam.

you could get a single Audiobahn AW1205X online for under $200. this subwoofer is amazing. it handles 1000 watts RMS, and has dual 2 ohm voice coils so you can wire it @ 1 ohm mono or 4 ohm mono. CAR AUDIO & ELECTRONICS did a test of the top four 12" subwoofers. and the AW1205X was the only one to get a perfect score for clarity at high volume, enclosure, SPL and a few other things. it hit the highest DB out of all the subs and they didnt even give it the RMS power.

i had one and i loved it. i ran it with an Audiobahn A275HC amp. i ran it bridged @ 1 ohm mono. it sounded great and hit incredibly hard (i used a 2.8cuft ported enclosure). nobody could believe that a single 12" would hit that hard and sound so good until they looked in the back and saw it. i got compliments everywhere.

I'd like to keep this under raps...but I wanna see what you guys think of this!! Dead Link Removed I searched for the AW1205X on ebay but couldnt come across anything...

Please tell me the differences I will have between a 12, 15, or perhaps this 18!! It would be damn cool to have a single 18, but is that what i want. and is that gonna have to be a pretty big enclosure or what?

Thanks again for informing me

Matt

dont bid on that auction!
that's not a real 1805X. i'm not exactly sure what model it is, but it's at least 2 or 3 years old. they dont make any subwoofer that looks like that anymore.
here is a picture of the real 1805X

the difference between the 12" 15" and 18" are frequency responce and efficiency. the larger speakers hit lower frequencies and are more efficient. also, the 1205 &1505 have dual 2 ohm voice coils but the 1805 has dual 4 ohm voice coils.

here's a dutch auction for the 1208X for only $195.

that's the best deal i ever saw for this model. one of these will hit incredibly hard.

SUBS

I would get the Image Dynamics IDMAX. It has excellent SQ and amazing SPL. Don't waste your money on JL W7 they aren't worth it. As long as you put these subs in the right size box you will be amazed!

or if you dont want to spend that much, here's a pair of the 1200 series for $175

Here is what i think, since you are money restriced and what not, i would personally go for some JL 12W3's. I have two 10W3 in the back with a BOSS amp and they slam. A 12 in. sub is going to be tighter than a 15" sub. A 15" sub will hit lower sounds that the 12 will. I personally would go for 12's, not 15's

I knew there had to be something shaky about that auction, thanks Leenjen! I've run the specs for these woofers and they are looking pretty good! I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with the AW1208X (which is better than the AW1205X, correct?) I'm not too worried about missing out on that auction because I'm sure that guy will be selling more, so I have time for more questions!

What is the minimum power amp I need to power this bad boy? Its rated at 1500 RMS and I know I won't need all of it. I have an old (1999) Alpine 4 channel amp that I think pushes about 200-300?? Do I need to start looking at amps?

Also just for Leenjen, if you've worked with this box before, have you figured out the best enclosure volume to put it in??

I appreciated the help so much!

Matt

I originally had a 12w3 in a prowedge box just sitting in my closet right now collecting dust. But that thing sounded real nice. Right now i have a 15in eclipse aluminum and this thing knocks harder than anything i have ever heard. But i was happy with my JL audio the only reason why i have the eclipse now is becuase i traded a nitro powered RC car for it.

i'll give ya $100 for the 12's in the closet

Even though it is just sitting in my closet right now collecting dust 100 bucks seems a little low to me concidering the fact that i purchaced the Prowedge box about 3 months ago bran new and it cost me a little less than $300 with taxes.

I am willing to sell it but for a reasonable price concidering it is basically bran new.
