Well Glacier I think I have some good news for you and the rest of the guys at this forum. Ive been talking to two guys this morning on the problem weve been having with the 2-3 flare. The first guy I talked to was from High Tech transmissions. I had called to see if they had any EPCs in stock. And he asked what year and what kind of transmission it was, so I told him. And then he had asked if I had any VB work through ford within the last year. And I told him Yes. Well he said that ford came out with a new revised EPC in 04 that is not as delicate. He said that even with a moderate amount of shavings or debris that this new EPC shouldnt fail this quick. He also told me that one way we would know for sure if it was the EPC was that we would have something wrong with all shifts. It wouldnt just be a 2-3 flare it would a flare in all gears. So then I asked well what would cause that flare then? And he said well since the 2-3 shift involves the intermediate band holding the direct clutch drum that it has something to do with either the band, the servo, or its not adj correctly. So then I told him that I had checked the band and that it was good. So then he asked if I had installed the spring in the intermediate servo from the shift kit. And I said yes. And then he asked if I replaced the piston, and I told him no. He said theres your problem. He said when we replace that spring that the piston HAS to be replaced. Then we started talking some more and I was telling him about this forum and the problems we are having. He said that if we are only having the 2-3 flare and nothing else then we should flush the tranny FIRST, THEN replace the intermediate servo piston and that should fix it. And that we should only replace the EPC if we have a flare in all gears. Now he did say however that if you are doing VB work and the EPC hasnt been replaced within the last year to go ahead and replace it. That it will save some troubles later on. Now im not saying that he is 100% correct, but he sounded pretty confident and he said that they work with those transmissions alot. So im going to try it and if it works. If it does we might have found a new CHEAPER cure for this 2-3 flare.

maybe when you do this you could do a sort of instruction on replaceing the piston with the tranny still in the car for some of us lesser experienced, with pictures maybe. i like pictures

Consider it done!! Ive been looking for a way to give something back to this forum, for all the help its given me.... I guess this could be a start!! Ill hopefully have a write up posted by tonight.

You found a smart tech. I disagree that a failiing EPC will show up in all gears. His advice is, however ... sound. ALL that said... you can buy a new 2004 FORD EPC for ??? or wait a few days and get a free one.

I do think this tech is way above average in his advice and knowledge.

If you do a photo thread on this replacement, and it becomes a useful thread, you have a chance of getting some Elite time on this forum if you submit it to Rick. We look forward to your servo replacement thread!

Oh trust me I am waiting for that free EPC. Im just kind of tight on money right now. So I was trying not to buy parts I didnt really need right now. And for $16 it seems like a good alternative. OH and dont think that I was trying to prove you wrong or anything, I was just telling yall what he told me. Im sorry if it made it sound like I was saying you were wrong Glacier. Like I said tho, I would still like to be part of the "EPC Test". I got the new piston already and with 30 sec to spare. I swear the ford parts guys at my store are real dicks. I was on the phone with him telling him my every turn, so that he wouldnt close and all he said was "well sir im going to hang up now cause we still close at 3 and its 359 so you better hurry" So I will be doing the install tomorrow morning. Im trying to decide how to do this tho. The tech I talked to told me that I didnt need to drop the pan to replace the piston. But I kind of want to anyway just to make sure that I havent blown the sep plate gasket and also to check if there is shavings. Its just that ATV shower thats keeping me from wanting to drop that pan for just a "check up". That 2004 EPC was quoted at $153 from ford and $109 from the ford parts network. Transmission Parts USA and BulkParts.com also sell them. Transmission Parts USA is out of stock tho!!

Thank You BrooklynBay!!! I will try my hardest to make it as useful as possible. It would be awesome to earn that Elite status!!!

Stay Posted Guys!!!
