- 1999 Ford Explorer XL
So I currently have a 1999 Ford Explorer, with only 84k original miles.
We recently bought the car off of an older lady, and I was looking to do a 4x4 Build.
Would it be safe/smart to do a muffler re-installation by myself? I know exhaust isn't the most complicated work, and I'd like to get into learning exactly how my own car works.
I'm planning on doing a duel exit glasspack installation, My explorer is only the 4.0L OHV, which has quite a weak sound.
The 1999 originally have single exit exhaust, but it doesn't connect till the front axis, after two cats on each side. My county doesn't have emission testing, so it would be safe for me to cut off a cat after the connection, before the muffler (if that's safe for the truck of course)
Could I simply cut after the two cats, and install the glasspack mufflers a few inches further down, with an exit at the side door? There's a cat after the y joint, and then the muffler, before a back exit exhaust. Should i also buy new front cats? or would it be okay for me to stick with the stock explorer cats.
And of course, is this simple enough to do with some neighborly help, (who has experience) Or should i have this all done by a shop.
