2006 Explorer XLT
i have an 06 XLT 4x4.

No Third Row.

Id like to add a drop down tv screen...about 19"...I have an extra flat panel that only weighs about 10lbs.

I was wondering if this is possible, and how do I attach something to the roof? I can easily build a hinge like support for it so it can drop down, but how do I mount it. Also, what about wiring. Anything I can tap into in the rear section or do I need to run somewhere else? And Im guessing extra batteries are needed? No problem.

Just a thought...if anyone could give me ideas or pictures thatd be great. Thanks!

Is it a car monitor, or like an actual tv you'd use in your house..

It would be an actual TV...but with extra low power output. Its meant to be in a car or rv...because of the low power output

Well, to mount it, you'd have to find some kind of bracket somehow to mount the "hinge" to, or do like I did, and put a big piece of wood up there and screw the mounts into it LOL

Power wise, is it a 12v tv, (like a cigg. lighter plug, or a house plug)

Its a house plug...so Id probably just use an adapter til I can get my grandfather (certified electrician) to wire me up something fancy.

And how do you mount the even the wood to the roof? Do you just screw through the roof and have the other end of the bolt sticking out the top of the ex? Or just use velcro? haha.

Lmao, I honestly would NEVER put another flipdown in my explorer, or any vehicle i ever own again, only for the simple fact of mounting it. It is the hardest thing I think ive ever done to my 92 LOL.

But I just pulled the headliner down enough to put a piece of wood in there, about 15" long, and 8-9" deep, about 1/2" thick, thne I just used smaller screws to screw the mount to the wood through the headliner, which is VERY rigged, so please dont come in here and start talking sh*t about it, because I already know. But hey, it works, and it looks good :D:D

As for power, yeah for now, if your not a good electrician :p just use one of those power inverters that plug into your cig. lighter.

Buy a nicer one, usually abot 40-50$ thats gonna be at least like 400 watts continuous power, and then once your electrician guy helps you, he can hardwire the whole thing, and hide it all...

There are mounting points in your roof where lamps, factory RSE, etc are mounted, you'll need to remove the headliner find the best spot and mount the piece of wood to one or more of those mounting points, that'll give you a level surface to work on
PS Post picks during and after :p:

Ya. Ive got a 1200 watt power inverter that I used to run all kinds of stuff before off of. Ya...thats a good idea with the wood...how hard was it to pull down the headliner and get it back up in the proper spot?

Now your making me wonderin if its easier just to get some strong mounting tape for the 10lb tv...lol. Did it work out nice? And what size tv did you put in your ex?

Yeah, thats where I was talking about, most people mount theres like where the interior lights are.

As for the headliner, I just popped those little push tab things out, and held it down with one hand, then pushed the wood into the middle, and made sure it looked level and all that LOL

I have a 12" its not really the nicest one, I like it though, it was just one of those spurs of the moment, I had the cash, guy at the store gave me a hell of a deal. (100$) lol

not bad at all. I got this 19" on black friday for $79, so it was a pretty good deal. I just thought itd be a neat thing to add it to the ex...time to call pimp my ride and get about 30 TV's mounted in it. haha

LMFAO Yea, I seen them with a bronco, add like a 60" FLIP-OUT tv, when you rolled the glass down in the back hatch, a tv came out, then flipped up, like those flipout headunits

damn. thats pretty nice looking. Definitly like it. And those subs look sick. Im planning on getting dual subs within the next month...just waiting for the extra cash to flow in

Ya ive seen that one on the bronco. pretty amazing what they can do. I wish I had that kind of time to pimp my ex.

Lol thanks man,
im 17
and I havent paid for anything in that explorer, besides the TV, wiring for the amp, and the tweeters.

(Im BIGGGGG into trading on craigslist LOL)

haha. Im only 18...boought my x 8 months ago when I was 17...still paying for it. lol. But im working day by day to get cash to do work on it. Eventually itll be nice looking.

I would hate to say it same it for your house and get a car one for your ex. With the one you have it will look like a hack job no matter how you do it. "look he put the tv from his kitchen in there".
Get a 12volt one meant for cars. This way you will not have to make a hinge system or anything. They come will all you need to do to install it. They are light weight, thin, and some come with a dvd built in. With these you will not need a power inverter to run it.

You could get something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LEGACY-15-C...66:2|39:1|72:1234|240:1308|301:0|293:1|294:50

which will have no weight to it (5 lbs at most).

When i was a pro installer i would lower the headliner enough to get a piece of wood up top. Use a panel adheasive and adhear it to the metal, or screw the wood to the factory braces. make sure you dont use screw that are too long and you go through the roof. Put the liner back up. screw the screen through the liner to the board (without going through the roof). Usually all the wiring needed is a 12volt switched wire (ignition wire) and a ground. Run a vidoe rca to it and your done.

Not to mention the tv he put in was a 12volt one and not a home tv

I like the one you found on ebay there...thats a good idea. And I do agree with the hack job...cuz it probably will look like that. May look into getting that and mounting it with the piece of wood.

thanks!

Yeah man, there not to bad these days, but if you take your time, you would be able to get something decent rigged up for your (kitchen) tv lol

Its pretty much up to you, ive seen people with 30" CAR flipdowns, and ive seen people with 10" tv/vcr combo's strapped to a milkcrate

Dothedew: i just looked at your cardomain page. You dont want to ruin that truck. if you dont feel like you can achieve a nice job buy the screen and call some different audio shops around you. Most smaller ma & pa type shops will install it for you. Charging like 150 or so for the install (for the screen). They will usually warranty the work, but not the product if you didnt buy it from them. Alot of the "big box" stores (best buy type stores) will not.
