Looking for some inexpensive but better than stock 6x8's for my sons 2000 Explorer. Are there any off brands that have OK sound?

I got a 4 Polk Audio 6x8s to replace my dying stock speakers for 150. Not sure if that's too much but they sound way better than stock. I'm not that big of an audiophile though since I drive with the windows open 90% of the time.

I have Boss Chaos speakers in my rig and they sound decent, not a lot of bass though, but i think that is the deck, as the set i had in my other car sounded great with a stock deck

What is your budget?

Maybe take a look at Crutchfield...

They have some as cheap as $29.99. You can get some 2-way Pioneer ones for $49.99, or some 2-way Infinity Reference ones for $59.99. Free shipping. Plus, if you don't like them, send them back. They are great on returns.

Maybe dig on Amazon.com also...

I forgot to mention mine are 3 way speakers. I'd go to Cruthfield and look around like stated and look at prices. That's where I got mine because they had a sale on them. Figure out what models you like best and then compare prices on the internet.

The stock deck doesn't use speakers to their full potential. The explorers are kind of known for that.

Bottom end kickers can be found for around $50 a pair. I put a set in one of my trucks and its much clearer than stock speakers on the stock deck.

Thanks guys. Went with the Infinity Reference. The silk dome tweeter makes highs so sweet. $59 on Amazon. They are efficient and get plenty loud on stock head unit.

Nice choice

I was going to tell you, those infinity reference speakers aren't that great. The previous owner of my truck put them in my truck, and they only lasted a year on a pretty standard aftermarket stereo with no external amp. Honestly, the pioneer premier 6x8s I put in my contour were better sounding and lasted longer anyway. As an added bonus, they cost about the same too.

Edit:

I should note that there is nothing wrong with Infinity products as a general rule, and they are usually pretty good... It is just their bargain product that I have a problem with.

I had Infinity Reference speakers in my ranger, and my brother had them in his car. A couple of the sets deteriorated in about a year, but I was honestly thinking it was a fluke thing. They sounded great, but the cone left. I think the 6x9s my brother had lasted a long time.

pyle blue
