This new thread is an update to a previous thread which is..
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137557

In this thread you will find that I was having a serious problem which basically disabled my vehicle. I could not start it, pull codes etc.. This was all caused by the 30AMP EEC Fuse Blowing.. This fuse powers the EEC Relay which powers many other things throughout the engine.. Fuel Injectors, 3-4 Shift Solenoid, MAF, Purge Canistor Solenoid etc...

I have been messing with this thing for about a month and a half..

Well, today I finally got the explorer running and was actually able to drive it around for 20 min!!!!

I'm sure you're wondering how I got it running.

It was all done through an Autozone wiring diagram and trial and error. I started by unplugging any and all connectors I could find with solid RED wires. I got lucky and finally pulled a plug which left the fuse intact... This allowed the explorer to start and it seems to be running without any problem..

Now, I need to know what this connection is and where the heck it leads too and if I actually need it. The truck runs fine without hesitation from 1st through 3rd gear. I did not take the truck up to highway speeds for fear of uknowing what this connection does or handles in terms of engine or transmission.. The truck ran smoothly like nothing had ever happened but if this connection keeps blowing it has to be something important..

Below I have included high rez pictures of the connection and where it leads.. Please let me know where this connection leads to and what the heck it does.. Thanx..

Let me know what you all find and or any input you can give on the subject... Again, with this connection unplugged, the EEC fuse does NOT blow and the truck seems to start and run fine...

Thanx,
Rudy

I think I found out where it leads.. Looking at the wiring schematic based on the what the RED wire from the EEC Relay powers, I was led to the either the
Torque Converter Clutch or the 3-4 Shift Solenoid...

These are the only things powered by the colored wires on that connection...

I'm not sure yet if it's the actual solenoids that are bad or just the wiring to them.. I'll have to take a look at that..

Could somebody verify this for me and let me know exactly where these are located and if possible take pics.. I will search around the forums as well..

Ooh and are there any other names for these solenoids because I can't find anything on Autozone about either them...

Tcc and 3-4 shift solenoids are inside your tranny, so I guess you should hope for wiring if they are causing your short. You won't find this stuff on autozone cause its internal tranny stuff

You can have shorts inside your tranny, some can be fixed by pulling the pan, others get more complicated.

But go read the thread posted below " no tcc or overdrive rriggs)" and "trans will not bshift into OD" by 86caprirs- It may help you a little. You are all working the same issue, tho you may have different causes.

Your test drive may not have been high enough speed to go into overdrive or lockup your torque converter. Your problems may be more apparent at higher speed.

Thank you for your reply.. As for the 3-4 Shift solenoid and the Torque Converter, do these only kick on if you are going at high speeds ? I need the truck for around town use only so no Highway speeds.. Top speed is about 45mph.. I live in a small town and our main road is only 35mph.. I just need it to last me a few months until I get my new car.. So will it be ok if I drive it as is or should I fix this problem?? In other words, will it cause problems with the engine or transmission if I don't go over 45mph and don't fix the problems and keep that connection disconnected..

Tcc Lockup occurs when you are driving at a steady rate of speed - if its not working you simply drive at a higher rpm and use a little more gas.

The 3-4 solenoid engages your overdrive I believe - others know more than I do about that. But it will not hurt to drive it around town without the 3-4 solenoid working. If you put the shift lever in 2 it will not try to use 3rd gear or OD

Just make sure your tranny fluid is where it should be.

If I'm not mistaken, the solenoids that are in question are accessed by removing the oil pan no? My friend told me that they are and that they are fairly easy to replace.. Can anbody verify this for me?

Ooh and driving around will not create any further problems. Today I finally got everything back into the explorer which was torn apart during the search process of the short... The X has been cleaned and vaccumed and except for a broken Headlight switch, everything went just fine and the X is in great running condition :).. I am hopefully going to get to the bottom of this short which is hopefully either a bad solenoid or the wiring to the solenoid which is outside the trasmission.. It would totally suck if it's an internal tranny short..
