I finally got a day off work, and planned to go to a big car show/swap meet, but since it was raining profusely, I decided not to go. I don't like trudging thru a swamp just to find some cheap parts.

So since I was bored out of my mind, and had nowhere to go, I stopped over by my Ford dealer and asked them if they could flash in any new software updates to my PCM. Initially, the service writer asked why, but when I got into explaining, he more or less stopped me and said we'll get it done for you.

45 minutes and $100 later, my PCM has all the newest updates. The tech didn't get into specifics about what was done, but mentioned that there were a bunch of updates that he installed.

My first road test I noticed the tranny does shift a little bit firmer and quicker now, especially 2-3 upshift. 1-2 is about the same, 3-4 is a little better, and 4-5 is a little better. There's still some of the original "stepping on an imaginary clutch pedal" feeling, but it's about half or less now. 2-3 upshift is really nice...It hits 3rd gear with some authority now, where before that was the sloppiest of all the gearshifts.
I also noticed the amount of lag time on a kickdown or when rounding a city street corner is greatly improved. Before, you'd make a corner and it seemed like the tranny was a bit confused on what it was supposed to do.

Engaging reverse or drive from park is quicker. Before, there was a considerable delay in initial gear engagement.

The throttle response is improved. I even mentioned a TSB regarding this, and the updates took care of it.

It seems to idle a little better. Before, it would always have a little unevenness to it at a warm idle.

When started, it idles up for a little while longer than before, and then smoothly settles in to its normal RPM. Before, it would quickly slow to its curb idle speed, and sometimes surge up and down till it warmed up a bit.

The best part is it's getting considerably better MPG now! Cruising on the freeway I'm now seeing 17-18 MPG on E85 fuel! That's better than it used to get on gasoline! I have to take a trip to the southern part of the state on Sunday, so that'll be an accurate way to measure any improvement. Last time I had to take that trip, I averaged about 15.7 MPG running on E85.

I'm happy with the results...I can't see anywhere that changed for the worse. Everything they did has made an improvement. In my opinion it was well worth the money spent.

Would you happen to have gotten a date on the latest PCM revision? My '05 has the same tranny wierdness that yours had, and I'd like to fix that when I get some spare cash. The dealers around here aren't the smartest, so I'd like to have some information when I take it in.

Thanks.

I could ask the service writer...He didn't have any specifics printed on the repair order. I know the tech that did the work too. He might remember or be able to look it up.

Do most dealerships do this? I wonder if my 04 has the newest updates to it? Not sure I want to spend the money for it, but I noticed a bit of lag when going to reverse or drive.

I really want to see what your MPH is. Please let us know. I am currently getting 20.5 on regular pump and the only mod is a K&N filter only.

My MPH varies. On the freeway it's around 70. On rural highways, closer to 60. :p:

I know what you meant...I just felt like being a schmartazz.:D

How did you get them to do it I would like to have mine done but the dealership near me said they only do a flash if there is a problem.

Guess I deserved that one its been a long day  LOL

Why did you have to pay? PCM updates should be free- they are in my area. I plan to take my 93 Ranger in and see if there are any recalls that need to be done next week. :)

I've never experienced free PCM updates. Not unless they're under a recall campaign, or there's a TSB issued and the vehicle is still under warranty.

I've never found a dealership that refused to take someone's money. I just went in and told the service writer that I want to make sure that the most current version of the software was in my PCM. I mentioned that I heard thru the grapevine that there was an update or two that would help cure the laggy sloppy shifting, and I wanted to find out if there were any re-flashes applicable to my vehicle.

Well, I guess there are some benefits to knowing the service manager and dealership owner in a small town then. They've also let me use their PCM device to correct for my tire size in the ABS module. :D

I used to be able to do that at my Jeep dealer. I knew the guys there real well, and they'd let me use the DRB III to do flashes, etc. on my vehicles myself. I'd bring them a case of beer once in a while and they were more than happy with that.

Interesting, can you find out the version # or date of that update ?
I have the same truck as you and if the benefits are as you say,it's worth the $.
Pls post, if you can get those details.

Well today was probably the worst day to gauge MPG. I was bucking 30+ MPH headwinds the whole way there, and of course the wind changed direction so I was driving into it again on the way home this evening. Not to mention it was impossible to keep the cruise set on the interstate...People were either driving 55 or 80. It was either kill or be killed...I couldn't set my cruise till I got closer to home on secondary highways, and by that time it was too late to get the average back up again.

I returned a paltry 15.4 MPG in a 279 mile trip. Pathetic.

Other than that, I like the way the tranny shifts now that it's had some miles to learn my driving style. Nice and quick, but not overly harsh. I'd still prefer a little more definition to them, but it's far and away better than it was.

I'll try to get the version number when I can for everyone else's benefit.

I was at Jefferson this weekend selling. It was a muddy mess! But I still made some money and had a good time talking to all the people.Yesterday was cold and windy today was less wind and sunny. No rain sat or sun.So far the best mileage I have gotten is 14.9 with e85.I haven tried gas yet as the price spread is about 75 cents per gallon.

Atleast you have a choice. I have not seen it in Florida.

Yup...Jefferson is where I was going to head on Friday but the weather kept me away.

Sunday I went to Janesville, and thought that would be a great time to get some MPG. I digress...It wasn't.

Got mine done today

04 Mountaineer Premiere, V8 AWD.
It fixed my 'sloppy' up shifting, but now I can really feel it downshift. I wonder if I need to give it some more time to adjust to my driving habbits. Or I wonder if the update made another issue I have more noticiable? When I am coasting to a stop under light braking I can feel it go down the gears and really thump into 1st, the RPM's even jump when it downshifts.

Delaer was more than happy to check for an update when I asked them, cost me $94.00.
