I would like to get a decent GPS unit for off-roading. The problem is that none of them are geared to off-roading or the weekend warrior. All the reviews I have found on the web have been geared toward hikers or city driving. I don't need one for city driving, other than having major streets and highways to see where I am at. I am considering the Garmin GPS V, and using the TOPO CD, but i am afraid 19MB won't hold Southern California like I want it too. Also, the detail isn't that great. I also found a smoking deal on a Lowrance 1600 brand new for $399(since they are phazing them out for the new GlobalMap 3000MT). The Lowrance is nice because it is Baja proven and comes with mapping software, an antenna, and a mount. However, it does not work with WAAS (not so much of an issue with SA turned off) and I am concerned about the detal in it's mapping software. Any suggestions, or input?

I love my Garmin GPS III Plus... not sure what you mean "designed for off-roading" but I use it for off-roading as well as road trips as well as when Im out hiking and my dad uses it when he goes out hunting, its great all around.

FYI, its about $200 cheaper then the V Plus, but doesn't give turn by turn instructions or beep at you :).

I too have the III Plus, unfortunately, it has been discontinued.

doh! id idn't know they'd actually discontinued it! Ohw ell, thats what ebays for! :).

I am using the Garmin eMap. It is great. I have the road expansion CD (don't remeber the name) and it shows many offroad trails on it and landmarks in great detail. Depending on where you want to mount it, I chose mine because it is vertical instead of horizontal. Anyway, I use mine all the time.

I have a magellan 330. It is the best one I have used so far.
